Bakery chef Emerson prepares a cake for a Navy birthday dinner on USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea on Sunday. On this huge aircraft carrier launching bombing raids on Afghanistan from the northern Arabian Sea, the aim is to have a sufficient quantity and variety of food. For the entire 5,500 crew, the ship's galleys prepare 15,000 meals a day and the food budget runs to almost $1 million a month. The Navy says it is scrupulous about its suppliers and the food service has health inspectors to check what is brought on board. —REUTERS
