GMCH employees submit memorandum
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 18
The Chandigarh Government Medical College and Hospital Employees Union today submitted a memorandum to the Director-Principal of the institute, the Adviser to the UT Administrator and the Secretary of Medical Education and Research, apart from the Assistant Labour Commissioner, for taking early action to revoke ‘illegal suspension’ of two staff nurses.

According to Mr Ravinder Kumar, office secretary of the union, the suspension orders were violative of the rules and instructions applicable to them. He claimed that the Administration had collected the relevant material and evidence in the case. There was no threat that the same could be destroyed by the employees, he added.

He maintained that the suspension orders of the employees were issued three months after the incident. These orders were unwarranted and amounted to misuse of power, he claimed.

He said there was no prime facie case against the employees because their role in the operation theatre was limited. He warned that if the Administration did not revoke the suspension, they would launch an agitation.

Office-bearers of various organisations yesterday held a meeting to condemn the Chandigarh Administration’s decision to suspend two nurses of Government Medical College and Hospital.

Among others who took part at the meeting were Mr Sant Singh Saini, general secretary, Punjab and UT Employees Joint Action Committee, Mr Gurmail Singh Sidhu, convener, Punjab Mulazim Sangrash Samiti, Mr Ashwani Munjal, general secretary, Employees Union, Mr Subhash Talwar, general secretary, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, and Mr Ramesh Kumar, president, Chandigarh, UT Subordinate Services Federation.

The meeting condemned the Administration for suspending the employees after a gap of nearly three months of the incident. They were of the opinion that suspension was unwarranted and illegal.

Senior Residents also submitted a memorandum to the Director-Principal of the college requesting him to revoke the suspension of Dr Anjana Sharma immediately.

DC sets up panel to grant medical loans
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, October 18
The Deputy Commissioner, Ms. Jyoti Arora, today set up a three-member committee in order to give loans to their workers for medical relief, till the payment from their Employees State Insurance is released.

This decision was taken during the monthly meeting of the Single Window Committee held here today. The decision was taken following complaints that the PGI in Chandigarh and AIIMS in New Delhi had refused to entertain patients because of the inability of the ESI to make early payments in these hospitals.

Chronically sick patients from the town were referred to the above mentioned hospitals and the payment for treatment was to be reimbursed by the ESI. As the reimbursement by the ESI is a slow process, the two hospitals, of late, had not been showing a keen interest in dealing with such patients.

Following this, a corpus fund of Rs 2 lakh had been set up for making payments on time, but the PGI had reportedly not been satisfied. Thus the Deputy Commissioner today set up a three-member committee comprising Mr C.B. Goel, chairman of the Haryana Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HCCI), Mr Vinod Kapoor, former chairman of HCCI and Mr S.S. Goel, general secretary of the Panchkula Industrial Association.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner also ordered that the land allotted for the ESI dispensary be cleared of encroachments within 15 days so that construction work could be initiated. She also assured that the bridge over the nullah in Industrial Area Phase I would be completed by March 2002.

It was also announced that a sum of Rs 25 lakh had been earmarked for the repair of selective roads in Industrial Area, Phase II.

Officials of the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) said there were only 4 per cent line losses in the Panchkula Industrial Area and that there was no power theft and minimum technical losses.

Shahi for special meeting of MC House
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 18
The BJP Councillor, Ms Ranjana Shahi, today urged the Municipal Commissioner, Mr M. P. Singh, to call a special and last meeting of the Corporation House before elections to take stock of what the local body has been able to achieve.

In a letter to the Commissioner, copies of which have been sent to all councillors and the Mayor, Ms Harjinder Kaur, she said discussing agenda items would only create a false hope among the people as decisions of this House could only see the light of the day during the next term.

She, however, said only the matter of functioning of public toilets could be kept on the agenda.

‘’We owe this meeting to ourselves, this Municipal Corporation and the people of this city,’’ she said in the letter.

Ms Shahi’s letter follows a missive from the Congress Councillor, Ms Kamlesh, who wanted a meeting of councillors to discuss issues of development.

The Mayor has also been favouring a meeting on the development of the city but seemed reluctant to call one as there were efforts in the last meeting to corner her on the issue of her reported statement of Chandigarh going to Punjab and the Punjabi and Hindi being made official languages of the UT.
