camp today Chandigarh, October 19 On this occasion, an osteoporosis detection camp will be organised at the department and Prof Raj Bahadur, Head of the Orthopaedics Department, will deliver a talk for the patients at 12 noon in the Orthopaedics OPD. Professor Bahadur said, “The osteoporosis is a disease of modern era of increased life expectancy and the sedentary lifestyle. This special day is celebrated all over the world to create awareness about the disease in general public. It does not manifest itself for a long period and has been given the name of ‘silent killer’. It usually manifests in the postmenopausal women and the men beyond the age of 60 in the form of pathological fractures around the hip joint, wrist joint
and spine. These fractures result from the trivial trauma and the management of these fractures is also cumbersome in an osteoporotic bone.” He maintained that early detection, before the occurrence of fractures, the treatment was possible in the form of administration of vitamin D, calcium and other drugs and incorporation of physical activity into one’s routine. Certain precautions to prevent the fall in the elderly could prevent the occurrence of fractures to a large extent. He said at the camp the detection of osteoporosis would be done with the help of a sophisticated computerised machine using the principle of bone densitimetery. |
