Annan invites Musharraf to Assembly meet

Islamabad, October 20
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today invited Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to attend the UN General Assembly Session starting November 10.

Foreign Office Spokesman Riaz Mohammad Khan said Mr Annan called up Mr Musharraf and requested him to visit New York and attend the General Assembly Session as there is a considerable interest in the world community about the development in this region because of the Afghan war and Pakistan’s “courageous’’ role in it.

However, he said, “No final decision about his visit to New York has been taken though the invitation is being seriously considered.

The spokesman confirmed that one of the senior Taliban officials Gen Jalaluddin Haqqani had talks with various Afghan leaders in Pakistan.

Within the limitations of the UN Security Council resolution against terrorism, Pakistan was extending all possible humanitarian assistance to the Taliban. UNI
