Motion against Nabha rejected
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 21
A special committee of Panjab University has rejected the motion of no-confidence moved against Santokhwinder Singh Nabha, president of the Panjab University Campus Students Council, sources said here today.

The motion was not even admitted by the panel because of non-availability of one third of the members of the council which includes the department representatives.

The committee had asked the complainant Bhupinder Beniwal, ousted chairman of the Students Organisation of Panjab University, to produce signatories in person, but he failed to do so, sources said.

The committee also held that signatures of general secretary Ankur Sharma who registered his protest against Nabha, were not genuine on the affidavit. The paper instead carried only his name in block letters.

Beniwal had moved the motion of no-confidence on the day of swearing-in ceremony of the new office-bearers. Vice-president Nidhi Puri and joint secretary Nishu Dubey have signed the letter of protest against Nabha. However, after the swearing-in ceremony, Nidhi pledged support with the council.

It has been pointed out that the application does not fulfill the conditions of its being allowed for no-confidence. Beniwal had assured support of at least 45 department representatives, which he has been unable to produce before the committee.

Bhavan Vidyalaya kids celebrate annual day
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, October 21
It was a day of music and melody, rhythm and rhyme, vigour and vitality for the junior students of Bhavan Vidyalaya, who celebrated their annual day function at Tagore Theatre 18 here today.

The celebration, which was mainly for the pre-nursery to class IV students, started with a prayer. The choir group, which consist of tiny tots of pre-Nursery, then set off the mood with an action song setting the audience in a foot tapping frenzy.

Bhangra presented by young students then reverberated the entire auditorium giving a glimpse of the rich, pulsating yet earthy folk culture of Punjab. It was then the turn of a short play, “Jungle Gatha” — an innovative satire on the political scene in India.

The young girls of the school’s Hobby Centre presented a graceful kathak recital. Their intricate footwork and graceful movements were full of promises for the future. One of the major attraction of the evening was the Dandia dance item presented by mentally challenged students of the school’s special cell.

Besides these, two Hindi plays — “Andhi nagri ka nyay” and “Story of Blood” — conveyed powerful social messages on justice and humanity. Another show-stealer was the Rajasthani folk dance, Kalbella, a dance of the snake charmers. The day ended with the fervent rendition of “Vande Matram” complemented by an emotional dance performance by the students of Class IV.

The cultural evening was inaugurated by the chief guest, Mr Ramshekher, Deputy Commissioner. Welcoming the chief guest and parents of the students, the Principal of the school, Mrs Meenakshi Mohindra, highlighted the importance of such activities in shaping young minds and also the role of the school in providing a platform to its students to exhibit their talents.
