Conference concludes

The 15th annual conference of the North Zone Ophthalmological Society concluded today at the Department of Ophthalmology, GMCH-32, Chandigarh. Prof V.K. Kak, ex-Director Principal, GMCH and Secretary, Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh Administration, presided over the valedictory function of the conference. He said the Department of Ophthalmology was one of the first departments in the GMCH to start postgraduate course.

The video session on cataract surgery and phacoemulsification was well attended. Dr M.P. Sachdev from Indraprastha Appollo Hospital, New Delhi, and one of the pioneers in phacoemulsification in India presented a video on phacoemulsification in difficult cases. Other prominent speakers were Dr Jagat Ram, Addl. Prof PGI, Chandigarh, Dr J.K. Pasricha, President, All India Ophthalmological Society, Prof R.C. Nagpal, Head, PGIMS, Rohtak.

An instruction course on computerised field charting was conducted by Dr S.S. Pandav of the PGI, Chandigarh, Dr Suresh Gupta and Dr Renu Sawhney of the GMCH-32, Chandigarh. The investigation is of great importance in the early detection of glaucoma (kala motia) which, if not detected in time, leads to irreversible blindness.

177 examined at free bone density test camp

Chandigarh, October 21
One hundred and seventyseven persons were examined at a free bone density test camp held at Dr Kamboj’s Hospital in Sector 44 here today. Organised by Panacea Biotech and sponsored by the Senior Citizens Welfare Association the camp was held for the detection of old age changes in bones (osteoporosis).

More than 60 per cent of the persons examined were found affected. They were diagnosed and prescribed treatment on the basis of test reports by Dr S.K. Kamboj. This was the third camp at the hospital. In the earlier two camps 250 persons were examined

Mr H. L. Jaspal, General Secretary of the Senior Citizens Welfare Association, Sector 44, and Dr Kamboj said more such camps would be organised in future also.

A free blood sugar test camp be organised at Dr Kamboj’s Hospital on October 28. And every month this camp will be held on the fourth Sunday, according to Dr Kamboj.

DAV cagers lift trophy

DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, clinched the third SNOSA Basketball trophy when in the final played here today at Shishu Niketan Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, they overwhelmed Guru Harkishan Model School, Sector 38, by 59-42. Rajvinder Singh and Balraj Singh scored 18 and 14 points, respectively. For losers, Thakur and Sunny netted 26 and 10 points, respectively. The two-day meet was organised by the Shishu Niketan Old Students Association. Dinesh Madra, secretary, said this time 11 teams had taken part in the tournament.

Earlier, in the semifinals, DAVSSS-8 outplayed SD Public School, Sector 32, while in other semifinal, SGHMS-38 defeated Army School, Chandimandir. Mr B.S. Sudan, Transport Commissioner, was the chief guest and gave away prizes to the winners.

St John’s and Hansraj in last four: Hansraj Public School, Sector 6, Panchkula, and St John’s High School, Sector 26, sailed into the semifinals of the under-16 section of the fourth Blessed Edmund Rice cricket tournament played here today at St John’s School. The other two teams which entered the last four were St Jospeh’s School-44 and Army Public School, Chandimandir, who won by default when Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, withdrew their team without informing the organisers.

Win for Khalsa Cricket Club: The Khalsa Cricket Club defeated the Bedi Cricket Club by 160 runs on the opening day of the seventh JAL cup league cricket tournament organised by the Chandigarh Sports Club, played here today at DAV College, Sector 10. In another match of the day, Jupiter XI beat the Chandigarh Sports club by eight wickets.

Cricket tourney: A fine knock of 101 runs in just 65 deliveries enabled the Godrej Cricket club in beating City Cricket club by 133 runs in the first DP Azad trophy being played here today at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, here today. In another match of the day, Kelvinator XI beat ECC XI by 125 runs.

TT titles for Dheeraj, Shikha: Dheeraj Arora of RBI and Shikha Sharma clinched the men and women singles titles, respectively, in the Prof R.S. Mehta memorial table tennis tournament that concluded here today at Sector 23 TT hall. In the men final, Dheeraj outplayed Munish Bhardwaj while Shikha defeated Barkha KC. Earlier, Sajal Kaushal bagged the boys singles title while girls singles crown was won by Nadia Saini. She also had won the sub-junior girls title while sub-junior boys title was bagged by her brother Dev Saini. Sadhika Kaushal wrapped the cadet girls title while Dev Saini the cadet boys title.

Wrestling meet from today

Prominent wrestlers of Punjab today said the Punjab Government was doing little to promote wrestling in the state. The wrestlers who excelled at the national and international level were not being encouraged by the government, said Sukhchain Singh Cheema, who won two medals in 1974 Asian Games. Mr Stanislav Harlo, a Russian coach on contract with India, said there was immense potential in India and only the technique needed to be improved.

Sukhchain Singh Cheema, who is father of Palwinder Cheema, a gold medallist in the 9th Freestyle Junior World Wrestling Championship in the 130 kg category held at Tashkent in August this year, said there was tremendous potential in Punjab which needed to be tapped. He was speaking at a press conference organised at the Dara Wrestling Centre which is the venue of wrestling competition going to start at the centre tomorrow.

R.S. Kundu, wrestling coach of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), said there was need to shift the ‘akhara’ wrestling from clay wrestling to mat wrestling.

About the tomorrow’s competition, Mr Kundu said at least 34 wrestlers of international-level in the senior, sub-junior and junior categories would be participating. There would be 20 bouts in the male category. The cash prize for different categories varied between Rs 31,000 and 5000 for the winners.

The prominent international wrestlers expected to participate were Palwinder Cheema, Ramesk Kumar, Jagdish Kaliraman,. Surjit Mann, Shamsher Singh and Mukesh Kumar.

Football camp concludes

A unique football training programme under the aegis of the Soccer Tech India for children in the 5-8 age group concluded at the Sector 42 stadium here today.

The programme spread over five Sundays was a learning experience for the kids who were taught the basics by the UT football coach Harjinder Singh and Shaji Prabhakar.

The children were taught the art of trapping, throwing etc.

On conclusion of the programme today, all participants were presented footballs by Dr N.S. Mann of Panjab University. These were sponsored by the president of the Chandigarh Boxing Players Welfare Association, Mr Jasbir Singh Khairwal.

Admn to take up employees’ demands

The Chandigarh Administration has informed a delegation of the Co-ordination Committee of Government and Municipal Employees and Workers, UT, Chandigarh, that the issue of release of bonus and DA to the left out workers would be taken up with the Central Government.

This was told in press note of the committee which also said the case regarding deputation of the corporation employees had already been taken up with the government.

The release said they were informed by the Home Secretary, Mr R. S. Gujaral, that the case in this regard was in the final stage of being cleared in the winter session of Parliament.

The co-ordinator of the committee, Mr Rakesh Kumar, said the demands of filling up the vacant posts, implementation of the assured career progression scheme, approval of service rules, appointment on compassionate ground and release of overtime to Chandigarh Transport Undertaking employees would be fulfilled in three weeks.
