Waiting for teacher
Deepkamal Kaur

Ludhiana, October 23
Four months have passed since the new academic session commenced at Government College for Women, but nearly 100 students of BSc (computer sciences) are still waiting for a teacher. With the examinations fast approaching, the students of all three batches are at their wits’ ends.

As per the timetable, the students should have attended six theory and six practical classes per week in the past four months. However, no theory or practical class has been held and the students have no alternative but to join private computer centres to complete their syllabus.

The fund-starved college has now asked the students to pay Rs 100 each so that they can appoint a teacher on an ad hoc basis. But a majority of the students have refused to pay, saying that they have already paid the fee and they are not responsible for the payment of their teacher’s salary.

Talking to this reporter, the students said they had repeatedly pleaded with the Principal to appoint a teacher. However, nothing had been done so far. The students said they were worried about the mid-session examinations scheduled to be held in the first week of December as next month again. They would not be able to attend classes as the college would be closed owing to national games.

The students said while a majority of them had already joined courses related to their syllabus at private computer education centres, others were planning to join one within the next fortnight. They said they had to shell out between Rs 2000 and Rs 4000 to get their syllabus completed at these centres.

When asked if they were being allowed to practice computers on their own, the students said the computer room had not been opened even once in the new session. They said they had heard that two new multimedia equipped computers had been installed, but they did not get a chance to see them. The students also said the classroom for the theory class was lying locked for the past three months and renovation had been started. They said they were not aware of any new room being allotted to them in lieu of the previous one.

Ms Inderjeet Gill Vashisht, Principal, when asked about the problem, said: ‘‘Ask the government regarding the problem. The same problem persists in other government colleges of Punjab too.’’ The Principal also asked this correspondent not to enter the college and talk to the students.
