The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has approved construction of a 140-bed trauma centre at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Professor P.K. Dave, Director of AIIMS told TNS that the foundation stone of the centre is expected to be laid in the coming month and the institute will try to meet the target of completing its construction within 18 months.

SAI scheme bears rich fruit for Indian hockey
M. S. Unnikrishnan

New Delhi, October 23
The much-maligned Sports Authority of India (SAI) has played a vital role in the revival of Indian hockey as eight of the players who helped India lift the Junior World Cup hockey title at Hobart, Australia are the products of its ‘Centre of Excellence’ scheme. The SAI started the ‘Centre of Excellence’ scheme in Bangalore in 1995 on an experimental basis. But soon, it took such firm roots that the Centre started churning out hockey players of excellence year after year.

The success of the Bangalore centre prompted SAI to start another “Centre of Excellence” for hockey at NIS Patiala last year, and in a short span, this centre too has produced players of class..

Goalkeepers Devesh Chauhan and Bharat Chetri, Prabhjot Tirkey, Ignatious Tirkey, Bipin Fernandes, Vimal Lakra, Arjun Halappa and Gagan Ajit Singh, are all products of the ‘Centre of Excellence ‘ who played key roles in taking India to the summit at Hobart.

Former Indian captain and coach M.P Ganesh, who was the Executive Director of the South Centre of the SAI when the ‘Centre of Excellence’ scheme was launched six years ago, sported an ear-to-ear smile as he waited to receive the Junior World Cup players at the Palam Airport today. Ganesh had every reason to be contended as he had taken a lot of interest in the setting up of the ‘Centre of Excellence’ and its consolidation.

Ganesh said the initial batch contained about 50 players, and the number has now been reduced to 30 players. “The idea is to produce players of merit, who can bring laurels to the country”, Ganesh said.

SAI takes care of all the needs of the players, though some of them are very gainfully employed in banks and oil companies.

Ganesh said getting jobs for the players was least of SAI’s worries as “our aim is not to get them jobs but to make them play for the country, at highest level”.

ESPN sports quiz book released
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, October 23
Former Indian Test player Abbas Ali Baig launched the ESPN Sports Quiz Book here today. ESPN Software India and Penguin have jointly published the book.

ESPN, which has brought the whole gamut of international sporting events to television screens across India, has now come out with this remarkable book which covers a wide range of sports like basketball, Formula One racing,

cricket and rugby. Sixteen full colour plates featuring prominent sports personalities enhance the appeal of the book.

Divided into three sections, designed to test the reader’s speed of reaction and recall, the depth and diversity of their knowledge and their judgement and confidence, the quiz book is an entertaining and informative treat for both sports and quiz enthusiasts.

The book contains a hundred trivia boxes that tell you fascinating and little known facts. For example, did you know that Ranjitsinhji is credited with the invention of the leg glance? (Experts thought it was an accident and refused to believe he was playing the shot deliberately). Or that the national ice hockey league has a rule that prevents their players from taking aspirin, though there is no rule against liquor or illegal drugs? Or that, the Ashes were recovered from a bail burned by Australian women at the end of the 1882-83 Test series against England?

“We at ESPN Star Sports are committed to promoting sports quizzing excellence in India and ESPN Sports Quiz Book further exemplifies our efforts in this direction”, said ESPN Managing Director Manu Sawhney.

Mukesh faces stiff challenge at Noida Open
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, October 23
Mukesh Kumar’s title defence faces a stiff challenge from a young bunch of golfers, including rookies Rahil Gangjee, Zia Kipgen and Jaiveer Virk as the Rs 7 lakh Noida Open Golf Championship commences here on Thursday. The main tournament, sponsored by the Noida Authority, will be preceded by the pro-am, to be played tomorrow.

Mukesh, the winner of last season’s Order of Merit, and ‘Player of the Year’ award twice, expressed his surprise at the rapid rate of growth in the standard of Hero Honda Golf Tour.

“Just as recently as one year ago, there were just three or four golfers — Vijay Kumar, Shiv Prakash, Feroz Ali and myself — who were considered the main contenders for winning any tournament on the Indian PGA Tour. Today, the entire scenario has changed,” Mukesh remarked.

Mukesh’s cause for concern holds water as the 2001-2002 Hero Honda Tour season has already witnessed seven different winners in eight tournaments played so far. Of these, three are first-time winners, including Yusuf Ali (Hindu Open), Zai Kipgen (Hyundai-MGC Open) and most recently, rookie Rahil Gangjee (HT Pro Golf, Lucknow).

Rahil Gangjee is the man in form. Rahil has already turned in four top-ten finishes, including a win in only his eighth start, at the last week’s HT Open in Lucknow.

“The win has given me a great amount of confidence in my abilities at this level. Till last week, I would go into a tournament thinking of a top-ten finish, but from now, I will aim to win every event I play,” said the 23-year-old Kolkata-based Gamgjee.

Nehru Hockey to start from November 10
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 23
Deviating from the normal practice, the 38th edition of the Nehru-ONGC Hockey Tournament will be played at the Shivaji Stadium from November 10 to 21, instead of November 14 to 25. This change has been made to avoid clash of dates with the National Games scheduled to be held in Punjab from November 19 to December 1.

A record number of 24 leading teams of the country have sent in their entries for the tournament. The tournament will be played, on a league-cum-knockout basis, in two phases this year. In the first phase, 18 teams, divided into six groups of three teams each, will battle it out. The winners of each group will join the six seeded teams directly in the second phase. Twelve teams will feature in the second phase, who will be divided into four groups of three teams each. The winners of each group will play the semi-finals and final.

The tournament will carry a cash prize of Rs four lakh—-an increase of Rs 1.5 lakh from last year. The winners will pocket Rs two lakh while the runners-up will get Rs one lakh. The remaining Rs one lakh will be divided between the third and fourth position holders, and also the four most promising players of the championship.

CM reviews govt report card as MCD poll nears
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 23
Taking a reality check on her government’s performance ahead of the impending Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) poll, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today summoned her ministers and reviewed the development projects undertaken by them in their respective constituencies and elsewhere.

The intention, she said, was to “tighten up and strengthen” the civic agencies and expedite the various development projects underway.

Making her displeasure known at the “slow” progress achieved by the MCD in redressing public grievances, Ms Dikshit told reporters that the agency had become “too large” and needed to be “broken up” so that political representatives also were given adequate powers.

To set up an interface between the government and the people, she said that ministers and MLAs had been told to interact with the resident welfare associations and ascertain their requirements in regard of roads, electricity, water, etc. Ministers and MLAs had been instructed to identify specific complaints of the people and prepare a plan of action to address their concerns.

“Outer Delhi does not have proper roads and needs more hospitals and schools while garbage removal, sanitation and power shortage have been a perennial problem in the East,” she said referring to the complaints pouring in from residents of these areas.

The meeting also discussed the likely strain on the exchequer the development projects and the conversion to CNG would cause.
