Will hockey heroes stir UT out of
slumber? Chandigarh, October 24 Yesterday, they were offered handsome cash prizes by the Union Sports Ministry, Indian Hockey Federation and the Punjab Government. But no such announcement of award has come from the UT Administration so far. When asked, Rajpal said yesterday, the Punjab Chief Minister, Mr PS Badal, was kind enough to include their names while announcing the allotment of plots to members of the team hailing from Punjab. Why has the UT Administration not come up with such policies in respect of players hailing from Chandigarh. Perhaps Chandigarh being a small place, cannot afford to spare such resources. However, the name of Chandigarh is acknowledged in national circles. In the past, there have been numerous examples of players opting to shift from the city due to better job opportunities in neighbouring states. Chandigarh is surrounded by Punjab and Haryana, which have always given top priority to according recognition to its players. Abhinav Bindra, the ace shooter who studied at Chandigarh and also stays here, sends his entry from Punjab in the National shooting Championship. Incidentally, he is one player, who has been given recognition both by the UT Administration and Punjab Government by honouring him at special functions. Sabeeha Dhillon, the young girl shooter, also studied and stays at Chandigarh. She became a national junior champion in air rifle in 1999 at the age of 16 years, while representing Chandigarh. She also represented India in international competitions. She was ignored on Republic Day and also during Independence Day functions. Now she is representing Punjab. Nadia Saini, the young table tennis sensation last year won titles in three age groups while studying in the local DAV Public School, Sector 8. At the age of 10 years, she was force to reckon with in this sport. Last month she took part in the Haryana State Table Tennis Championship and hopes to reap rewards in times to come since Haryana is considered a sport-loving state. Chandigarh’s cricketers like Yuvraj Singh and Dinesh Mongia represent Punjab since UT is not directly affiliated with the national cricket body. Mr Sidharth Chattopadhya, senior IPS officer of Punjab and president of the Amateur Judo Association, Chandigarh, had told this reporter the other day that when he was based at Ludhiana as SSP, he had made a strong state judo team by helping them in getting jobs in Punjab Police, but in Chandigarh he was helpleses. Sports experts are of the view that what to talk of any guaranteed awards, the cash awards function of the UT administration has not been held for the past two years. |

Bar Council to have new
office Chandigarh, October 24 It is learnt that the council has decided to set up a new office in Chandigarh only with a view to avoiding any dispute between advocates belonging to Punjab and Haryana. Talking to Chandigarh Tribune, the secretary of the council, Mr C.L. Munjal, said that the council could buy a new office in SAS Nagar and Panchkula at a much lower rate than in Chandigarh. But to avoid any dispute the council preferred Chandigarh only. Mr Munjal said that the Bar Council would take about three months to shift to the new office despite the fact that the Deputy Commissioner had directed it to vacate its office in the District Courts before November 15. He said that the council had sent a letter to the Administration requesting that “it will take a little time. The council is seriously searching for a suitable accommodation and we hope that the same will be found immediately”. He added that it was the responsibility of the state to provide a proper place for the council office. Sources said that the District and Sessions Judge had sent a letter to the Administration on September 17 and asked for getting the premises vacated in accordance with orders of the High Court. The sources said that there was a shortage of space in the District Courts to maintain its record files. The sources said that earlier the Deputy Commissioner had turned down the request for grant of six months’ time to vacate the premises. |
