‘Need to invest more in R&D’

The Indian pharmaceutical industry needs to dedicate a larger share of its budget to research and development, keeping in view the tough competition it will have to face in the post-patent regime era, said Mr S.C. Chaudhry, Financial Commissioner (Indu-stries), Haryana, while addressing the technical session of a national seminar on ‘Analytical overview of Indian corporate sector’ at Panjab University here today.

The two-day seminar organised by University Business School (UBS), PU concluded today .

About 54 students presented papers with in-depth analysis of demand management, cost management, production management, market structure and pricing policy during the seminar.

Mr Chaudhry spoke about the lack of initiatives by the Indian pharmaceutical industry and said it should gear up to meet the challenges ahead.

During the fifth technical session, students presented papers on economic and SWOT analysis of Dr Reddy’s Laboratory, Wockhardt, Cipla, Glaxo, Ranbaxy and Smithkline Beecham.

Mr Anand Kumar, Vice-President; ICICI Bank, presided over the sixth technical session. He emphasised on ethical values of companies and said profit making should not be the sole aim. Economic and SWOT analysis of Hero Honda, VACL, Pfizer, MRF and BILT were presented by the students during this session.

Students were awarded mementoes for their presentations during the valedictory session which was presided over by Prof S.P. Singh, UBS, and Prof K.K. Mangla, Chairman, UBS.

Punjab and Haryana High Court XI win title

Chandigarh, October 28
Fine pace bowling by Sandeep Moudgil, a former Haryana cricket player, helped the Punjab and Haryana High Court XI to defeat the Andhra Pradesh High Court XI by four wickets in the final of the All-India Inter-High Court Lawyers Tournament played here today at the PCA Cricket Stadium, SAS Nagar.

Earlier, the AP High Court team won the toss and elected to bat. Gangadhar, Gobind Rao and Suryanarayan scored 58, 47 and 42 runs, respectively. The team was able to score 188 runs for eight wickets in the stipulated 35 overs. Chasing the target, Premjit Hundal of the Punjab and Haryana High Court team scored 89 runs while Puneet Bali, a former Ranji player, scored 40 runs helping their team in gaining a four-wicket victory over the AP XI.

Premjit Hundal was declared man of the match and the best batsman of the tournament. Suryanarayan was given the man of the series award.

Mr Justice V.K. Bali of the Punjab and Haryana High Court was the chief guest. He gave away the prizes to the players.

Brief scores: AP High Court XI 188 for eight in 35 overs (Suryanarayan 42, Gangadhar 58, Gobind Rao 47, Sandeep Moudgil 2 for 26). Punjab and Haryana High Court XI: 191 for six in 31 overs (Puneet Bali 40, P. Hundal 89, Navdeep Singh 14 n.o.).

DP Azad Trophy

An unbeaten half century by Sushil Siwach, who scored 67 runs in 39 deliveries, and a deadly spell of bowling by Surinder Singh ‘Baijee’, who claimed four wickets for just 10 runs, enabled the Kelvinator XI in beating the Chandigarh Youth XI by 130 runs in the DP Azad Trophy cricket tournament played here today at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19.

Kelvinator XI:
210 for four (Sushil 67 n.o. Ravinder 39 n.o., Azad Kumar 41, Harminder Singh 47, Vaneet Khosla 27, Sameer 2 for 36). 
Chandigarh Youth XI:
80 all out in 19th over (Dhananjay 17, Dinesh 14, Surinder Singh ‘Baijee’ 4 for 10, Harminder 2 for 16, Shymlal 2 for 22).

Cricket MEET

The Indo-Dutch XI outplayed the Life Insurance Corporation XI by 106 runs to move into the final of the second Dailwari Inter-Institutional Cricket Tournament played here today at Gursagar grounds.

216 for nine in 30 overs (Vinod 34, Rajiv 41, Lalit Joshi 70, Anil Arya 2 for 37, Amarjit 3 for 23).

IGP opens police posts today

Panchkula, October 28
The Inspector-General of Police, Ambala Range, Mr Harish Singh Ahlawat, will inaugurate two police posts and the Crime Against Women Cell tomorrow.

According to information, two new police posts — in Sector 15 and Sector 21 — are being set up in the town. The Crime Against Women Cell is also being set up in the town with the assistance of two NGOs in order to deal with the growing incidences of crime against women.

It is learnt that with the ever expanding boundaries of the city, the need for setting up new police posts was long felt. The Sector 21police post under the Sector 5 police station was already existing and the IGP will be inaugurating the new building for the police post.
