Two states vie for top-notch cricketer’s
services New Delhi, October 29 Punjab wants Sarandeep to play for the State, but Delhi too is keen to have Sarandeep in their ranks, to bolster their depleted bowling attack. Delhi would be missing India discard Nikhil Chopra and Ashish Nehra as the former would be playing for Uttar Pradesh while Nehra would be doing Test duty for India in South Africa. Delhi thought that it had good catch in Sarandeep Singh, who is waiting in the wings for Test recall, when he started attending the coaching camp being conducted by chief coach Bishan Singh Bedi and Surinder Khanna at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground since October 1. Sarandeep is eligible to play for Delhi by virtue of being a resident of Delhi. But he had apparently not completed the transfer formalities on time, and Punjab is making use of this lapse on Sarandeep's part to deny him migration certificate to Delhi. Sarandeep should have applied for transfer before October 1, but he applied for transfer ten days later, and Punjab has refused to take cognizance for his transfer application. In fact, Punjab has named Sarandeep in its Ranji Trophy squad for its first league match against Himachal Pradesh, starting at Mohali on November. Delhi will take on Services in its opening Ranji league campaign from November 1 at the Air Force ground, Palam. But due to the prevailing uncertainty regarding Sarandeep's participation, the Delhi senior selection committee has deferred the announcement of the Ranji squad. Sarandeep is trying to get back into the India team as he was dropped like a hot potato despite an impressive Test debut against Zimbabwe in Nagpur last year. He had claimed six wickets in his debut match, but with the return of Harbhajan Singh, Sarandeep has been consigned to the cold storage. Interestingly, Nagpur seems to be a good hunting ground for Sarandeep as he put up an impressive bowling performance in the Irani Cup at the orange city a few weeks back. If he turns out for Delhi, Sarandeep will get enough opportunities to catch the attention of the national selectors. Delhi also desperately needs his services to inject variety into its bowling attack, which has suffered considerably in the recent months with some of their leading players deserting the Delhi team for various reasons. Meanwhile, former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi has been keeping the probables in ship-shape with a well-planned coaching schedule. The Delhi and District Cricket Association has also been extending the best of facilities to the probables at the coaching camp, but due many reasons, the Ranji squad has not yet been announced, the Sarandeep factor being just one of the reasons. Meanwhile, DDCA vice-president C K Khanna, who is also a senior vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said here today that a meeting of the Umpires' Committee of the BCCI will be held at the Ferozeshah Kotla stadium on November 3 to finalise the posting of umpires for the forthcoming tour of England tow India. |

Randhawa, Atwal move to second
stage New Delhi, October 29 Randhawa tied for the third place at the Martin Down Country Club in Stuart, Florida, while Atwal was joint eighth in the National Golf Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Also moving into the second stage was the third Indian player in the fray - the 1994 Honda-Siel PGA champion Daniel Chopra. The India-born Swede was tied for the fourth place at Old Fort Golf Club in Murfreesboro, Tenessee. The first stage of the PGA Tour Q-School was played over 13 different courses across the United States and only the top 21 from each venue made it to the second stage. Randhawa, who started with a bang, shooting an eight-under 64 to lead by two strokes on the opening day, closed with a two-over 74 on the final day but his 10-under 278 aggregate was enough to ensure him a ticket to the second stage. Randhawa had scores of 64, 71, 69 and 74 on the four days. Atwal, who withdrew from the five million dollar Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on the final day despite making the cut, just to catch his tee time in the US, proved his decision was worth the effort. Atwal had scores of 73, 70, 71 and 73 for an aggregate of one-under 287. However, conditions were tough at the National Country Club and the winning score was just four-under 284. Daniel Chopra, who has displayed a remarkable return to form in the last few days, closed with rounds of 66 and 68 to aggregate 12-under 276, after shooting level-par 72 on the opening day, followed by a 70 on day two. The second stage of the Q-School will thus feature four Indians with Jeev Milkha Singh joining the three when the competition resumes across six different courses in the states of Texas, Florida and California from November 4 to 9 and then from November 11-16. |

Move to disband Hodal depot
opposed Faridabad October 29 While it is learnt that the main cause behind the decision of the government was ‘losses’ suffered in the ‘earnings’ of the roadways department, other sources reveal that the income of the sub-depot, Hodal, had been Rs 8.73 and Rs 8.20 per bus per kilometre for August and September this year respectively. It is reported that buses of the sub-depot had travelled 352 km on an average in September alone, which is stated to be one of the highest. The president of the roadways union at Hodal claims that the main reason behind the ‘losses’ was the plying of illegal vehicles.
