Iodine deficiency awareness drive launched

Chandigarh, October 30
With a view to creating awareness about iodine deficiency disorders, the National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme Cell, Chandigarh Health Department, in tandem with the Indian Council of Social Welfare, Punjab, launched a one-week awareness campaign here today.

Dr (Ms) Vanita Gupta, Programme Officer of the programme, said students from 10 government schools were apprised of the problem.

She claimed that 1,200 students were informed about correct use of iodised salt.

She said the Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Week concluded with a quiz at the Sector 19 Government Senior Secondary School.

The Director of Health Services of Chandigarh, Mr Rameshwar Chander, was the chief guest, while the Director of Public Instructions, Mr D.S. Saroya, also attended the function.

She said an exhibition on goitre and IDD was also arranged, where posters, handbills and informative literature on IDD was displayed. On-the-spot testing of iodised salt was done to check the iodine content of salt used by the community.

Dr Rameshwar Chander announced that going by the efforts of the department, Chandigarh would soon achieve non-endemic status. Prevalence rate of IDD below 10 per cent labelled the area as non-endemic, he stated.

Award for PGI docs

Two PGI doctors, Dr Ashok Gupta and Dr M.G. Rajiniganth, have been awarded the best paper award for the S.B.S. Mann gold medal at the 25th Northwest Zone Conference of ENT held in Patiala past weekend.

They have carried out excellent work on endoscopic optic nerve decompression . This deals with blindness in trauma patients.

Hockey players welcomed

Two city hockey players namely Inderjit Singh and Raj Pal Singh, who were part of the Indian junior hockey team, which won the Junior World Cup title held recently in Australia alongwith a former hockey player, Mr N.S. Sodhi, who accompanied the teams as a manager, were welcomed by members of the Chandigarh Hockey Association at a function held at hockey stadium, Sector 18 this evening.

Mr Yash Vohra, secretary of the association, said these players did the city and their association proud with their achievement.

Inderjit and Rajpal, the centre forwards of the team, were the products of Chandigarh and did their schooling and learnt the rudiments of hockey in the city only. Mr Sodhi, a senior officer with the State Bank of India, was also one of the guiding force for the team’s fine win. Among others who present at the function were: Dharam Singh and Tarlochan Singh Bawa, both former hockey Olympians, Avtar Singh Kohli, Indian Hockey Federation observer; J.S. Sandhu, a senior CHA office-bearer, and Sushil Kapoor, another noted sports lover.

Basketball team

Nivedita Gupta will lead the Panjab University basketball women team for participating in the North-East Inter-Varsity Basketball Women Tournament being held at DAV College, Kangra.

Members of the team are: Nivedita Gupta and Mandeep Brar (both from PU, Chandigarh) Rajwinder Kaur and Balwinder (both from DAVC, Hoshiarpur), Kamaljit Kaur and Harinder Kaur (both from Government College for Women, Ludhiana), Sarita, Babita and Harpreet Kaur (both from Government College, Sector 42), Aruna Rani ( Government College, Hoshiarpur), Ranjeeta Rana (GCG-11,Chandigarh) and Gaganpreet Kaur (Dashmesh Girls College, Badal).

Mr M.M. Malhan, SAI coach, will accompany the team as coach-cum-manager of the team.

Office-bearers

Mr Baldev Singh, SP (City), and Mr M.S. Brar of Government College for Men, Sector 11, were unanimously elected as president and general secretary, respectively, of the Chandigarh Tug-of -War Association. Other office-bearers are: senior vice-president — Mr Jarnailsingh; vice-presidents — Mr G.S. Sarao, Mr K.L. Sharma, Ms H.K. Khangura, Mr PritamSingh, Mr K.S. Bharti , Mr H.S. Dhanoa; Joint Secretaries — Mr Pawan Rana, Mr Ravinder Bawa,Mr K.S. Thakur, Mr Raj Pal Singh; and Treasurer — Mr Nirmal Singh.

Ball badminton meet

Government College for Girls, Sector 11, outplayed GGD SD College, Sector 32 at 29-6, 29-6 in the Panjab University Inter-College Ball Badminton Tournament (Women) played on knockout basis at the PU grounds here on Tuesday. In other matches, GGS College for Women, Sector 26, beat Government College for Girls, Sector 42, at 29-15, 29-10, while Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 45, defeated AS College for Women, Khanna, at 29-3, 29-4. In the PU Inter-college Football ‘A’ Division Men Tournament, Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, defeated Government College, Sector 46, by four goals to nil.

Football meet postponed

The Mohali Football Club has postponed its 13th Open Football Tournament which was scheduled to start from November 2 at SAS Nagar. This was stated by Mr Kanwarjit Singh, general secretary of the club. He said the new dates would be announced shortly but the entries could be given at phone 671317.

Mayor apprises IG of traffic problems

The Municipal Corporation here today drew the attention of the Inspector General of Police, Mr Bhimsen Bassi, to the problems of safety, traffic management and ineffectiveness of beat system.

This was conveyed to Mr Bassi at a meeting of councillors, corporation officials and the Mayor, Ms Harjinder Kaur, held at the Mayor’s office today.

Mr Bassi said the police had been focussing on traffic management as it was the biggest challenge before the police in the wake of 40 per cent increase in the population and 100 per cent increase in the number of vehicles in the city.

He said it was all the more difficult in the wake of Chandigarh Police not being able to recruit a single traffic policeman during the past decade.

The Mayor suggested that beggars and salesmen at traffic signals should be checked and traffic sense had to be made a mass movement.

She said challaning fee could be given to the Municipal Corporation which was facing fund crisis.

Ms Harjinder Kaur said cycle, rickshaw and rehri owner should be told to install reflectors and there should be separate lanes for them.

The corporation sought the help of the police in being vigilant against encroachments and managing parking lots, which was rejected by Mr Bassi who said this had to be managed by the Corporation through its own resources.

The Mayor suggested that roundabouts should be done away with and traffic signals should be put up. This was also rejected by the IG.
