Mr Bassi said the police had been focussing on traffic management as it was the biggest challenge before the police in the wake of 40 per cent increase in the population and 100 per cent increase in the number of vehicles in the city. He said it was all the more difficult in the wake of Chandigarh Police not being able to recruit a single traffic policeman during the past decade. The Mayor suggested that beggars and salesmen at traffic signals should be checked and traffic sense had to be made a mass movement. She said challaning fee could be given to the Municipal Corporation which was facing fund crisis. Ms Harjinder Kaur said cycle, rickshaw and rehri owner should be
told to install reflectors and there should be separate lanes for them. The corporation sought the help of the police in being vigilant against encroachments and managing parking lots, which was rejected by Mr Bassi who said this had to be managed by the Corporation through its own resources. The Mayor suggested that roundabouts should be done away with and traffic signals should be put up. This was also rejected by the IG. |
