Fortis Heart Institute fully operational

Cosmetic surgeon to attend World Congress

A pioneer in the field of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery and a world-renowned Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr B.P. Singh, today left for Sydney to participate in the “Second World Congress on Cosmetic Surgery”.

The five-day workshop will discuss new inventions, techniques and needs in the field of cosmetic surgery. Top surgeons from world over are expected to participate in the World Congress. Dr B.P. Singh is the only participant to represent the entire Indian sub-continent, which is a matter of pride for India, particularly Punjab.

Earlier in 1995, he was one of the seven top surgeons invited to participate in the “Round Table Discussion on Ear Construction” held in Tokyo in Japan.

PGI extends last date for indemnity bond

Chandigarh, November 1
The PGI authorities have extended the last date for furnishing an indemnity bond by a Jalandhar-based security company which has been awarded the annual security contract.

The agency, Punjab Security, was scheduled to take over charge yesterday night but had failed to do so. Now it has been asked to furnish the bond valued at about Rs 12 lakh by November 5 midnight. Till then, the agency which is providing security now will continue.

Last night at the PGI, 180 security men belonging to the agency providing services for the past one year waited for the annual change of guard.

This caused a lot of distress to patients and their attendants. When none of the men of the new contractor turned up beyond midnight, the Chief Security Officer of the PGI , visited the hospital and asked the contractor and his men to continue.

Junior shuttlers leave for Ooty

A 10-member Chandigarh mini and sub-junior badminton team, including five girls has left for Ooty (Tamil Nadu) to take part in the National Mini and Sub -Junior Badminton Championships. The team, as selected by the Chandigarh Badminton Association is: girls—Neha Sethi, Harleen Kaur, Seema, Aastha and Purnika. boys—Oscar Bansal, Neeraj Kapoor, Vikas Kaul, Narinder and Munish Bansal. coach cum-manager- Mr Sunil Bansal.

Meet begins

The Regional Sports Meet, Northern Region of Vidya Bharti, an institution running more than 19,000 schools and colleges all over the country was inaugurated here today by Dr P.C. Kashyap, Regional Director, Sports Authority of India, at Sharda Sarvhitkari Senior Secondary School, Sector 40. As many as 325 sportspersons drawn from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, HP, Jammu and Kashmir will be taking part in various events such as kho-kho (under14,17), kabaddi, badminton, table tennis, volleyball, handball. The chief guest stressed the role of sport in one’s day-to-day life.

A new scientific testing-cum- fitness centre became functional today at Sector 42 Sports Complex. According to Sanjeev Sharma, Deputy Director, SAI, Northern Centre, the centre will function in two sessions, morning 6 am to 9 am and evening 5 pm to 8 pm. The body composition analyser was also being provided at the centre in order to ascertain the physical fitness of the masses by the SAI. The SAI proposes to start a ‘Fitness Mela’ every second Saturday in collaboration with the UT Sports Department. Desh Prem Azad Dronacharya in cricket was the first member enrolled at the centre.

In the fourth Blessed Edmund Rice inter-house cricket tournament for under-16 section played here today at St John’s High School, Sector 26, Sidharth Soni did superb bowling when he claimed two wickets for 24 runs but could not save his team O’skeeffee House in losing to Crease House by seven wickets. In another under-16 tie, Morissey House beat Edmund Rice House by one wicket. In under-14 section matches, Edmund Rice House outplayed Morissey House by five runs while O’keeffe House beat Crease House by nine wickets.

Resuming from their overnight score of 83 runs for two wickets, Minor district team today piled up a huge total of 277 runs for nine wickets in 73 overs in the Punjab Inter District under-16 cricket tournament for ML Markan trophy being played here today at SAS Nagar. Mandeep Singh scored a century, with 18 fours and two lofty sixes for Minor District team.

Volleyball meet opens today

Panchkula, November 1
The two-day district-level volleyball tournament will open tomorrow at Sector 7 government school, here, said Mr Randhir Singh, President of the Panchkula District Volleyball Association.

Mr Randhir Singh said the district team for the state-level tournament, to be held at Chautala village in Sirsa district from November 9 to November 11, would be selected on the basis of this tournament. A three-member selection committee will select the players.

A cash award of Rs 3,100 each will be given to the championship winning team of boys and girls, while the runners-up will get a cash award of Rs 2,100, besides certificates.

The tournament will be inaugurated by the Urban Development Minister, Mr Subhash Goyal, at 10 am tomorrow. The Joint Director, Legal, HUDA, Mr Om Prakash Godara, will preside over the function.

The Deputy Speaker of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha, Mr Gopi Chand Gehlot, will give away the prizes at the valedictory function to be held on November 3. Managing Director of the Haryana State Cooperative Land Development Bank, J.P. Panjeta, will preside over the concluding function.
