Firing across LoC, four injured
Tribune News Service and Agencies

Srinagar, November 1
Four persons working as porters with the Army were injured when Pakistani troops fired from across the LoC in Uri sector of Baramula district this morning.

A defence spokesman said here that Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing in the sector at about 9 a.m., which continued for about two hours. The injured porters have been admitted to a hospital here and their condition is stated to be serious.

An Army jawan was killed in the same area yesterday in cross-border shelling by Pakistani troops. Officials here claim that Pakistani troops have taken to unprovoked shelling and firing across the LoC recently to help trained armed infiltrators sneak into the valley ahead of the coming winter. The high mountains through which the LoC passes remains covered under heavy snow during winter months, making infiltration difficult for the militants, according to the officials.

More than a hundred persons have been killed and several others injured due to shelling and firing from across the LoC during the past three years.

Meanwhile, six persons were killed and 15 injured, including three police personnel, even as three militants were arrested with five kgs of RDX in separate incidents in the state since last night, an official spokesman said today.

Security forces shot dead three militants in an encounter at Jandrala in Mandi sector of Poonch, Jammu, he said.

Two more militants — Abdul Haneem and Abdul Haleem — were gunned down by security forces in an encounter in a village in Gurez sector of Baramula yesterday, the spokesman said.

He said militants threw a grenade towards a police station in Kralkhud in Srinagar which exploded on the road causing injuries to eight persons, including two police officials.

At least one person was killed and six others injured when militants exploded a grenade at Kunzer Chowk on the Srinagar-Gulmarg road today. The grenade was targeted at a passing security vehicle but it exploded on the road causing civilian casualties, official sources said. The spokesman said a policeman was hurt when an IED planted by militants exploded at Indh-Gool in Udhampur, Jammu.

Seven persons were abducted by unidentified gunmen from different parts of the state, he said.

Special Operations Group of local police arrested a militant, Mohammad Ismail, along with 5 kgs of RDX, a mine and 50 rounds of ammunition from the Sheikhpora area of Badgam district in Kashmir today. Back
