Fortis to open chain of superspeciality centres

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 3
After establishing a 200-bed superspeciality hospital at SAS Nagar, Fortis Healthcare has begun working on establishing a chain of similar superspeciality medical centres covering Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, UP and Delhi.

“Our vision is to have a string of such hospitals, each connected with the other, through telemedicine, covering the whole of north India”, says Mr Harpal Singh, Chairman of the Fortis Healthcare, which is promoted by Ranbaxy Laboratories, India’s leading pharmaceutical company. “Our objective is to set up an excellent health delivery system, comparable with the best in the world”.

In an interview here today, Mr Harpal Singh said that to begin with, it was planned to set up medical centres at Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Bathinda and Shimla besides three more in the NCR region including NOIDA, Gurgaon and Delhi. Each of the superspeciality hospital in the NCR region, would cost about Rs 150 crore. “Work on the Amritsar centre has already begun. It will be a 30 to 50 bed facility. We are in the process of negotiating with several persons. It will either be the outright purchase of an existing medical centre or construction of a new one. We can also collaborate with a hospital which is already operational, after upgrading it suitably to worldclass standards. We are open to all sorts of possibilities”, he said.

Mr Harpal Singh said he was also looking at the possibility of setting up a 100-bed hospital at Shimla. “There is one up for sale in the Himachal capital." My advise to the other hospitals already existing in the region is: Don’t get into competition with us. Instead, synergise with us. We can all work together for an excellent health delivery system in this part of the country”.

Mr Harpal Singh said he hoped to have the entire network of hospitals in place within the next three years by which time it would emerge as the biggest healthcare system in the private sector in the country, overtaking Apollo, Wockhart and Manipal.

“All our hospitals and medical centres will be digitally linked with each other. Therefore, even if a patient is in Amritsar, he will be able to get the best of medical treatment available with Fortis in any part of the country. If he requires specialised treatment, he will be sent to that particular superspeciality hospital set up by Fortis at SAS Nagar or in the NCR region. Thus, our hospitals in the region will also function as outreach centres for superspeciality hospitals”.

Turning to the Fortis Heart Institute at SAS Nagar, he said, it had been conceived and designed to compare with the very best cardiac facilities in the world. The institution itself reflected a remarkably different approach to cardiac care as three critical facets are located on one campus — a superspeciality hospital, a multi-speciality medical centre and a rehabilitation centre-cum-medical inn for follow-up care of patients, catering also to family comfort.
