Maharashtra, TN win carrom

Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu emerged winners in the boys and girls team championship in carrom, respectively, in the 47th edition of the National School games, organised at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45. In boys section, second place went to Andhra Pradesh while third to Chandigarh. In girls section, AP secured second place while Maharashtra third. In all, five teams took part in this section. In the league matches played today, Maharashtra beat Chandigarh at 3-0, AP defeated JNV at 3-0, Maharashtra beat Punjab at 3-0, AP beat Chandigarh at 2-1. In girls team
championship, Tamil Nadu outplayed Andhra Pradesh at 3-0, Chandigarh beat Punjab at 3-0, TN beat Punjab at 3-0, AP beat Jawahar Navodya Vidyalya at 3-0 and Maharashtra beat Chandigarh at 2-1. The total entries for girls championship were six. Later in the individual section, seven matches for girls section while 10 matches for boys section were played. Results: (individuals) girls singles: The winners were, Nabhi Sahni (Chandigarh) Chinkar (Maharashtra), M. Parimala (TN), K Deepa (TN), Nazia Ansari( AP) and T. Maheshwari( TN); (boys section) — Kajrolkar (Maharashtra), Ramanpreet (Chandigarh), Rahul Nanda (Chandigarh), Memon Shaty (Maharashtra), Pawar Surjit (Maharashtra), Ravinder Kumar (Chandigarh), L.Gopi Krishna (AP), Dhruva (Chandigarh), Hodelkar Arif (Maharashtra) and Shah Ramzan (Maharashtra).
Cricket tourneyPower Cricket Club, Rajpura, raced to a facile six-wicket win over MES, Patiala, to lift the trophy in the final of the inaugural Anoop Memorial Cricket Tournament, organised by the MES Cricket Club, Patiala. Batting first on a bouncy matting wicket, the MES, team scored 146 runs and were all out in 27.3 overs. Ravinder Thakur with four hits to the fence and one six scored 32 runs, while Brij Mohan and Yuvraj scored 26 runs each. Jasmit got three wickets for 21 runs while Satish, captain of the Rajpura club, claimed two wickets giving away only 31 runs in four overs. The Rajpura club cruised to victory scoring 147 runs for four in 26.1 overs. Jasmit Singh was the top scorer with 33 runs and he hit five fours and a six. Satish was the second highest scorer with 25 runs. Yuvraj took two wickets in five overs conceding only 22 runs. Yuvraj of MES, Patiala, was declared man of the tournament. The man of the match was Satish of Rajpura club, best batsman was Kailash of Factory XI, best bowler again was Satish, best wicketkeeper was Venu Saigal of Rajpura and best fielder was Shankar of MES, Patiala. The Chief Engineer, MES, Brig Rajinder Singh, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes. The organising secretary of the meet, Mr H.S. Arora, said the next
edition of the tournament will be organised on larger scale with more teams from the region.
Tennis meetChandigarh outclassed Karnataka at 2-1 on the opening day of the All-India Civil Services Tennis Meet played here today at the Sector 10 Tennis Stadium. Earlier, the meet was inaugurated by Mr Karan Avtar Singh, Secretary, Sports, U.T. Mr Rajan Kashyap, President, CLTA, and Mr M. Ramsekhar, Secretary, CLTA, were also present. Results: Chandgarh Administration. B Karnataka 2-1 (Harish Saini b Dr Malikaarjun 6-2, 6-0; A.S. Jaggi lost to KH Sanganagouda 2-6,4-6; Harish and M Ramsekhar b Ashok Kulkarni and Arvind S 6-1, 6-0; MP Civil Services b RSB Bhubneshwar 2-0; RSB Indore b Patna 2-0. Tomorrow, the Chandigarh Administration will play with MP Civil Services team. The open events will also start tomorrow.
Billiards championshipParmod Kumar outplayed Anandit Joshi in a one sided affair at 205-129 on the second day of the 18th N.K. Duggal Memorial Chandigarh State Junior Billiards and Snooker Championships played here today at Billiards Coaching Centre, Sector 22. In another billiards tie, Vishal Gupta defeated Deepak Chaudhary at 202-133 while Gagandeep Singh Makkar beat Amit Verma at 173-138. The winners in today’s snooker matches were: Parmod Kumar, Amit Verma, Deepak Chaudhary and Manoj Rana.
GGDSD-32 winSGGS College, Sector 26, and GGD SD College, Sector 32, outplayed their respective opponents:
PEC, Chandigarh, at 13-0 and Government College, Sector 11, at 4-0 in the Panjab University Inter-College Zonal Hockey Tournament for Men played here today at PU grounds. In the first match between SGGS-PEC, Rajpal Singh an international hockey player, scored six goals while Manmohan Singh scored two goals and Gurpreet, Harwant, Rajinder, Budh Nath and Harwant Singh all one goal each. In second match between SD-GCM-11, it were Mandeep and Ravdeep who scored two goals each for the winners.
Sports meetAs many as five schools of Mauli Jagran took part in the second sports meet held on the occasion of Children’s Day here today. The meet was organised by the Schools Association of Mauli Jagran, U.T. The schools which
took part were, GN Holy Heart Public School, Friends Public school, New Shivalik Public School, DS Model School and Shivalik Public school. Mr K.S. Thakur, sarpanch, Mauli Jagran, was the chief guest while festival was presided over by Mr Mohinder Singh, former sarpanch, Budhanpur, Panchkula.
