Vigilance Awareness Week celebrations end

Chandigarh, November 6
The Director of the PGI, Dr S.K. Sharma, today asked all employees of the institute to work with vigilance.

Presiding over the concluding day function of the Vigilance Awareness Week observed by the PGI from October 31 to November 6, Dr Sharma said the country had not developed according to the wishes of our founding fathers, although the country had attained Independence more than 50 years ago,

Dr Sharma gave away prizes to those employees who excelled in various events organised during the Vigilance Awareness Week. The events organised during the week included essay writing competition written quiz competition and oral quiz competition.

The National Fertilizers Limited asked its employees to take pledge to continuously strive to bring about integrity and transparency in all spheres of their activities. Messages sent by Mr L.K. Advani, Mrs Sonia Gandhi and Mr N. Vittal, Central Vigilance Commissioner, were read out to the employees.

The commencement of the vigilance week at the Technical Teachers' Training Institute was marked by reading out messages received from Mr N. Vittal, and Mr V.S. Mathur, Vigilance Commissioner, administering pledge to all employees to stamp out corruption from the institute.

The Bhakra Beas Management Board organised a seminar which was inaugurated by Mr Rakesh Nath, Chairman of the BBMB. He emphasised the need of vigilance awareness for eradicating the root of corruptions prevailing in the most of the society of the world.

The Power Grid Corporation of India Limited involved all its employees with the celebration of the vigilance awareness week. Students of Shivalik Public School participated in a debate on ‘Corruption in public life and its eradication’. Mr A.K. Kapil, Additional General Manager of the corporation, asked employees to undertake self introspection.

Workshop to repair wheelchairs at GMCH-32

Chandigarh, November 6
Two city firms have taken over the free of cost repair and maintenance of wheelchairs and trolley stretchers at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32.

The mechanical workshop for repairs was inaugurated by Prof S.B.S. Mann, Director Principal of the institute, here today. Prof Mann applauded the initiative taken by Mr Atamjit Singh of Chopra Engineering works, SAS Nagar, for his nobel service to humanity.

Dr Raj Bahadur, MS, GMCH, expressed his gratitude over the taking up of maintenance work of hospital equipment which he stated was an ardent need of the institute.

Mr Atamjit informed the audience that the idea to start such service originated during the time when his parents were admitted to the hospital and he found that the trolleys and wheelchairs needed repairs. The workshop will be located in the hospital basement and working round-the-clock. It will soon take up work of doing modifications on these equipment to make them more efficient.

Neha, Simmer make city proud

Neha Singh and Simmer, upcoming tennis players of Chandigarh have made the city proud by winning series of titles in the national-level meets by playing in a stupendous form. Daughters of a senior tennis coach Baldev Singh, both have till now played a consistent game over the years. Both are students of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, Chandigarh. It was the sheer hardwork and regular practice undertaken by them which have resulted in their present elated status in tennis, Baldev Singh said.

Neha Singh recently won three All-India Tennis Association (AITA) titles in below-16 section held at Delhi, Chandigarh and Amritsar.

Simmer’s performance too remained outstanding in the under-14 and under-16 sections. She outplayed Kamalpreet Bhullar to wrap up the North Zone under-14 AITA title. Then she reached the under-16 final also. When asked, if there was any permanent sponsor for them, his father said still they were looking for someone who could help them financially so as to further take part in various international tournaments.

Tennis meet: Chandigarh outplayed MP Civil Services team at 2-1 in the All-India Civil Services Tennis Tournament played here today at Tennis Stadium, Sector 10. In other matches of the day, Haryana beat RSB, Chandigarh, at 2-0, RSB Indore defeated Delhi NCT at 2-1, Gujarat beat Tamil Nadu at 2-0 while Haryana beat Punjab at 2-1.

Hockey tourney: SGGS College, Sector 26, outplayed GGD SD College, Sector 32, by 5-0 in the Panjab University Inter-college ‘A’ group hockey tournament played here today at PU grounds. The scorers were, Rajpal Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Williamjeet Singh, Manmohan and Navdeep.

Senior Golf results: Brig A.S. Gill, Maj-Gen Kandal and Capt Shamsher Singh emerged triumphant in their age-groups in the senior Golf Tournament for those above 50 years played for the first time at the Chandigarh Golf Club.

Members above 65 years of age played nine holes and below 65 years of age 18 holes. This was a stableford tournament with ¾ handicap.

More than 100 took part in this tournament.

The results: 50 to 65 years: Brig A.S. Gill 35 points (better back nine)1, Capt PPS Sawhney 35 points (better back six) 2. 65 to 70 years: Maj-Gen M.S. Kandal 18 points 1, Col A.S. Sandhu 17 points (better back six)2.

Above 70 years: Capt Shamsher Singh 18 points (better back six)1, Lt-Gen K.S. Gill 18 points 2.
