2 of Mayor’s office in hospital
Letter with white powder received

Jalandhar, November 6
A letter laced with a white powder like substance was received at the office of the Mayor here today, which led to the hospitalisation of two employees of the office with skin-related problems.

Giving details, District Health Officer O.P. Chabbra told newspersons that the two employees, Ms Shoba Uppal, a junior assistant at the Mayor’s office, and peon Chander Mohan were admitted to the emergency ward of the Civil Hospital after they complained of itching on the hands and arms.

He said the itching was caused due to the white substance which was in the envelope containing the letter addressed to Mayor Subash Sharma.

Lying in the hospital Mr Uppal said she had received the letter and the peon had opened it. Immediately both she and the peon felt itching on the hands and arms, Mrs Uppal said.

Dr Chabbra said his office was intimated through the local police and the letter and envelope was taken into custody and later sent to the medical college in Amritsar for chemical analysis. He said another letter laced with white powder was received at division number-II police station and this too had been sent to Amritsar. The second letter was addressed to a constable but was not opened. UNI
