4-day expo on Indian medicines

New Delhi, November 7
The Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy (ISM&H), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) are organising a four-day exhibition on Indian medicines and healthcare here in December.

Sources in the ISM&H said that the exhibition, Arogya 2001, scheduled to begin on December 15 at Pragati Maidan will provide people an opportunity to visit speciality clinics run by experts in homeopathy, Ayurveda and Unani systems of medicine and avail of herbal beauty treatment. Apart from drugs and equipment, some medicinal plants and books on traditional systems of medicine will also be on display.

Secretary in the Department of ISM&H Shailaja Chandra said that the ITPO has agreed to provide free entry to visitors during the exhibition. Every evening, homeopaths and ayurvedic and unani practitioners will address audiences on various themes.

Sources in the department said that the speakers would include Dr V. K Gupta, former Principal, Nehru Homeopathic Medical College, Delhi and Dr Ashok Seth, head of the homeopathic centre at Ganga Ram Hospital. They will speak on ‘Modern Life and Cardiovascular Diseases’ and stress related issues.

According to Dr Eswara Das, Deputy Advisor of Homeopathy in the department, SBL, Dr Bakson Drugs and Pharmaceuticals, Dr Willman Laboratories, M/S Wilmur Schwabe India, M/S Syntax International Private Limited and Bhandari Homeopathic Laboratories have confirmed their participation at the exhibition. Dabur and Baidyanath would also participate in the event.

The Rashtriya Ayurveda Vidyapeeth, a government-run institute has approved names of Gwalior-based Veni Madav and Mumbai-based Narendra Nath Bhat and K. R. Kohli to run speciality clinics. No fee will be charged at any of the clinics.

Dr M. Shamoon, Deputy Advisor (Unani) in the department said that Dr Raisur Rehman from Tibia College and Mr Ashar Qadeer, lecturer in Hamdrad University, will speak on ‘Easy and spot diagnosis in Unani’ and ‘Unanipathy - a science of Health and Disease’ respectively. Visitors to the exhibition can also consult well-known Hakims including M. S. Usmani, A. J. Khan, Shakeer Jamali and S. P. Bhatnagar.

Some Unani drug manufacturers participating in the exhibition are Hamdard Wakf Labs, New Shama Unani Laboratories and M/S Rex Remedies and Sadar Lab. Manufacturers of equipment used in preparation and packaging of Unani formulations are also participating in the exhibition. These include M/S Mixofill, M/S Premier Engineering Works, M/S Babbar Engineering and Electric Work.

Khalsa College crush Deshbandhu by 92 runs

New Delhi, November 7
SGTB Khalsa College (Evening) defeated Deshbandhu College (Evening) by 92 runs in the Inter-college cricket match held here today.

Khalsa boys made an impressive 185 runs in the allotted 40 overs. In reply, Deshbandhu could manage only 92 runs. Mandeep Singh scored 50 runs and ensured the victory for the Khalsa College. He was the top scorer in the match which was almost one sided with the wickets of Deshbandhu college boys falling at regular intervals. 

Fast bowler Amardeep Singh swung the match in favour of Khalsa by taking three wickets.

The match was played in the newly constructed cricket ground in Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce. The pitch has been prepared at a cost of Rs 10 lakhs, Mr Jaspal Singh, the Principal of the college told NCR Tribune. 

He said the DSGMC had given a grant for the construction of the cricket ground. Veteran cricketers like Bishen Singh Bedi and Maninder Singh supervised the preparation of the pitch. He said, “The ground has a fast out field and the pitch favours fast bowlers.”

CM peps up gala opening of Police Games with sops

It was an opening ceremony befitting a national championship. The Chief Minister was there. And there were hordes of VIPs and the who’s who of Haryana Sports to line the gala opening. The inauguration of the 33rd Haryana Police Games and Athletic Meet by Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala in Gurgaon today was a majestic affair. Adding sheen to the function was the presence of Haryana Olympic Association president Abhay Singh Chautala, who is also the president of the Amateur Boxing Federation of India.

The Police Lines ground, reverberating with the beating of drums, was fully decked up to receive the VVIPs and the sports persons. And typical of the large-hearted Haryanvi ethos, no effort was made to make the opening ceremony a grand and majestic affair. The five-day Haryana Police Games, being held for the first time in Gurgaon, and outside Madhuban, will now rotate to different venues in the State. Rohtak will be the venue next year.

As if carried away by the vibrant sporting atmosphere, Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, addressing the large gathering, said sports persons from the state would be provided all the required help and incentives to excel in national and international sports events.The deserving ones would face no obstacle in scaling greater heights as no effort would be spared to provide them with the best of facilities, he said.

Mr Chautala also announced that the state government would recruit 150 sports persons into the police force. This would be in addition to the 120 sports persons recruited to the state police recently. Some of the prominent sports persons already on the rolls of the Haryana Police are wrestler Jagroop Singh Rathee, IPS, Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajinder Singh, DSP Mohinder Singh, Inspector Lachman Singh, Inspector Tejbir Singh, Sub-Inspector Pyare Lal, Sub-Inspector Dharam Pal, ASI Om Prakash and ASI Satbir Singh.

Haryana Director-General of Police M S Malik said 250 women would be recruited to the Police Department by November. The department would also open an all-woman’s police station in each of the four ranges of the state. These stations would start functioning by the end of this year. Mr Abhay Singh Chautala said he was confident that the sports persons from the state would bring medals from the 202 Asian Games and the 2004 Olympic Games.

An impressive PT show by about 400 newly recruited police personnel was the highlight of the opening ceremony. The large gathering was also treated to folk songs and folk dances. Director of the Intelligence Bureau K P Singh would be the chief guest during the closing ceremony on November 11. President of the Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation Ajay Singh Chautala will preside over the closing function.

Kapil opens golf camp for poor youth

Former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev inaugurated a golf camp set up at the Army Golf Course here to promote the game among the under-privileged youth in the society.

Organised by a charitable society, The Golf Foundation, the camp will provide a short-listed group of boys with regular coaching and tips on training and nutrition. The camp will also supply equipment and take care of their finances to play junior tournaments being held in and around Delhi. Kapil had a word of encouragement to the youngsters: “You have to make your own career. Hard work is the only key to success.” He, however, advised the youngsters that “the most important thing is not to neglect your studies in the process. Education will give you confidence to do well in not just sports, but life as a whole”. Kapil told the boys, “You are lucky to have these facilities at your disposal. Work hard, and success will come. Your success will bring a lot of joy to all of us. You have to do your country proud.” Ashok Jaipuria, president of The Golf Foundation, said: “We aim to produce a Tiger Woods from India.

People may say there is only one Kapil Dev, but I believe there are many more who have not been provided with an opportunity and facilities to play.

Workshop on sports medicine in Dec-Jan

The Sports Authority of India (SAI), in collaboration with the Indian Association of Sports Medicine (IASM), will organise workshops and certificate courses in sports medicine and allied sports sciences from December 2001 to January 2002.

IASM president Dr P.S.M Chandran, who is also the director of sports medicine, SAI, announced here today that the sports medicine courses, meant for coaches, physical teacher and doctors, will include a seven-day certificate course in sports medicine (from January 18 to 24), sports psychology (December 6 to 12) and sports sciences (January 10 to 16).

Besides a two-day workshop on sports injuries (December 19-19), sports nutrition (December 14-15) and doping (December 21-22) also will be held.

Dr Chandran said the last date for registration for the programmes is November 24. Detailed information can be had from the Sports Medicine Centre, J N Stadium, New Delhi.

Move to revise electoral rolls in Noida

In view of the impending legislative assembly elections, the District Administration has initiated the revision of electoral rolls.

As such the names of new voters will be added to the list of the voters in the district up to November 29.

Voters can get their names, age, or address changed in the voters’ list, if they have not been listed correctly.

The District Magistrate and District Election officer, Mr Deepak Kumar, who presided over a meeting of election staff today, instructed the district election office staff to complete the work on time.

He told The Tribune that this work would be conducted from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm at all 330 voting centres in the district on November 10, 11, 24 and 25. The electoral officials will be available on these days at their centres.

Those attaining the age of 18 years on January 1, 2002 may get their names included in the voters’ list by filling in Form No 6.

In case of a voter having expired, Form No 7 and for changing the name and address of the voter, Form No 8 are to be filled in.

The district magistrate made it clear that the voters’ list prepared for the panchayat elections and that for legislative assembly elections are different. All bona fide citizens must get their names registered for the legislative assembly elections.

Mr Deepak Kumar appealed to one and all to extend their cooperation in this work.

He said that those associated with the political parties should help in the distribution of these forms and getting the voters names included in the list.

“It is a crime to get a name included in voters’ list of two different areas/localities and such persons may be punished under law.

Voters above 80 years and those between 19 and 20 years will be scrutinised.

Before the publication of list, objections will be heard up to January 5 and on January 7, final electoral rolls will be published.

The Additional District Election Officer, Dr Arun Vir Singh, said that from November 5 to 12 in rural areas and from November 16 to 20, photographs will be taken for the last phase of photo identity card in different sectors of Noida.

He also invited suggestions from the citizens for the change of voting centres.

The district magistrate and district election officer warned that stringent administrative action would be taken against election officers and employees, if they are found negligent in examination, scrutiny or any other work concerned with the electoral rolls.
