DAV-8 boys clobber GMS-28

Chandigarh, November 9
DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, clobbered Government Model School, Sector 28 by 203 runs in the under-16 boys section of the UT Inter-school cricket tournament played here today. The DAVSSS-8 scored 245 runs for the loss of four wickets with Harjit and Sumit Kamboj scoring 66 and 62 runs, respectively. Amit also batted well with 54 runs.

In reply, GMS-28 were bundled out for 42 runs .Rajneesh and Pritpal claimed three wickets each for DAVSSS-8.

In other matches, St Stephen’s-45 beat Government Model School, Sector 41, by 148 runs; Government Model School, Sector 34, defeated Government Model School, Colony 4, by nine wickets; and Government Model School-44 beat Government High School, Kajheri, by 75 runs.

In the UT Inter-school handball matches, DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, defeated Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, by 34-14; Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, beat Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, by 20-9; Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, beat Government High School, Sector 41, by 14-6, while DAVSSS-8 defeated GMSSS-19 by 23-9.

In the Inter-school basketball matches, DAVSSSS-8 beat St John’s High School, Sector 26, by 38-24; Guru Nanak Khalsa School, Sector 30, beat Shishu Niketan School-22 by 47-26.

In the throwball matches, GMSSS-40 beat GMSSS-46 2-0 while GMSSS-23 beat GMSSS-33 2-0.

In the under-17 section girls basketall meet, Government Model High School, Sector 26, beat IS Dev Samaj School-21 to win the title.

City pair out of men’s doubles

The city pair of M. Ramsekhar and Jasjit Singh played a thrilling match against Mohd Wahid and Ravindra Babu before losing in the men’s double semi-final of the All-India Civil Services tennis meet played here today at Tennis Stadium, Sector 10. The Chandigarh pair lost by 6(5)-7, 3-6. In veteran singles semifinal, A Hanif defeated C.R. Gangadharan by 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.

Earlier in the team event, RSB Jaipur defeated Central Sectt, Delhi, 2-0 (Jagdish Tanwar b K. Jayaraman 6-0, 6-1; Chanderveer Singh b V. Shanker 6-2, 6-0).

Semi-final line-up complete

Pramod, Gagan, Anandit and Sumit sailed into the last four of the 18th N.K. Duggal Memorial Junior Billiards and Snooker Chandigarh State Championships being played here at Sector 22 today.

In the junior snooker section, top seed Parmod Kumar registered an easy win in his quarterfinal match against Deepak Chaudhary. Pramod won by 62-22, 67-34, 79-27. In the second tie, third seed Anandit Joshi outplayed Akshay Manchanda 51-25, 53-42 and 60-41. In the third tie, Sumit Talwar, the second seed played, a tough tie with Vishal Gupta and finally won by at 54-29, 42-62, 55-20, 51-32. In the fourth match, Gagandeep Makkar outplayed Sukhbir Singh 42-50, 49-22, 50-15, 52-17.

Volleyball tourney

The Pauri Garhwal Iriyakot Malla Sangathan, Chandigarh, will hold a volleyball tournament to mark the first anniversary of the formation of Uttranchal on November 10 and 11 at the grounds of Sector 30-B. According to Mr Ram Prashad Sharma, general secretary of the sangathan, Mr Vipin Kumar, a businessman from Sector 35, will inaugurate the meet while prizes would be distributed by Mahant Azadnath, Pracheen Shiv Mandir, Sector 19.

TT championship

The Chandigarh State Table Tennis Championship will be organised by the Chandigarh Table Tennis Association from November 21 to 25 at TT Hall, Sector 23. According to Mr Patanjali Kumar, secretary, CTTA, the events to be held include men and women singles and doubles, boys and girls singles, sub-junior boys and girls singles, cadet boys and girls singles and mixed doubles. The team championship in sub-junior, junior, men and women section would also be held. He said the matches will be played in accordance with rules and regulations of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI). Cash prizes will be given in the individual events. Entries close on November 18 with Mr Rajeev Kaushal or Mr Sanjeev Aggarwal at the above venue.

Kabaddi tourney

The Youth Welfare Club, Landran village (Ropar), in co-ordination with residents of the village will organise 18th Kabaddi Tournament at the village from November 15 to 17. The three-day meet will be inaugurated by Mr Kulwant Singh, former sarpanch, while closing function on November 17 will witness Mr Balbir Sandhu, member PPCC, while Mr S.S. Dullo, MP, would give away prizes.

Selection trials

The selection trials for the UT School Gymnastics team will be held on November 20 and 21 at Sports Complex, Sector 7. According to Mr Brahmjit Kalia, District Education Officer, UT, the boys and girls in age groups below 14, 17 and 19 will be eligible for participation in the trials. The selected team will then take part in the 47th National School Games to be held at Ambala from December 5 to 8.Back

 

New office timings from Monday

Chandigarh, November 9
The timings for offices of the Chandigarh Administration will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in view of the winter months. The change will be affected from Monday (November 12) and will remain in force till February 28, 2002, a spokesperson of the Administration said tonight.

Till today offices were functioning from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. The timings will be applicable in all offices of the UT Administration, including boards and corporations.
