Sports round-up
Haryana’s proud skaters
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh
Five girl skaters, Priyanka Sharma, Rayasha Rajput, Amrita Singh, Anuja Chauhan and Reetika Sharma, have made Haryana proud. These trainees of the Hansraj Skating Club, Panchkula, were in the Indian roller hockey team which won the bronze medal at the ninth Asian Roller Skating Meet held at Taitung City (Taiwan) recently. These girls are seen practising at the skating rink, among small boys and girls who take lessons from their coach, Balwinder Johal. Priyanka Sharma, who captained the Indian roller hockey team, said it was her second Asian meet. Earlier in the 1999 Asian Meet at Shanghai (China) she had helped India win the bronze medal. Priyanka was also honoured at the Republic Day function last year. Anuja Chauhan took to skating only last year. Earlier she was interested in basketball and judo.

Rayasha Rajput, a student of Class XII, said the rink at Panchkula, where she practises, had the right environment for skating. Rayasha also took to skating late, but though her aim is to go in for a course in Fine Arts, yet she would love to continue with skating. Rayasha said her maiden trip to Taiwan had been very absorbing.

Amrita Singh, another young skater, is now in Class IX and her aim is to help bring gold medal to India in the 10th Asian Skating Meet. She says her recent experience has helped her learn new techniques and now she spends more than five hours at the rink. Amrita, who also took part in the 8th Asian Skating Meet in China, said their main weakness was physical strength which they were trying to improve. Reetika Sharma, a Class XI student, said it was her first trip to Taiwan. She said the Italian coach who remained with the Indian team at Taiwan also helped them in improving some finer points.

Balwinder Johal, the coach, said the school management was also giving all support and their centre had become the hub of roller hockey activity and that skaters from Chandigarh and Mohali were converging on this rink.

Carrom meet: Last week saw the 47th edition of National Carrom which was played at St. Stephen’s School, Sector 45. This school has given a new lease of life to carrom, which has so far been considered a hobby sport. Now this sport is catching up and if all the carrom activities of the past one yea are to be listed, these may surpass many other popular games. Now that the School Games Federation of India had added it to its calendar, it is for the Chandigarh Carrom Association to convince other states to participate in the national meet.
