Shun negative approach: doctor
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, November 12
Eminent heart surgeon and executive director of the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre Dr Naresh Trehan has emphasised upon proper awareness among people to prevent heart disorders.

Speaking informally to mediapersons after inaugurating a new showroom-cum-workshop of Hero Honda Motorcycles on Mathura Road here today, Dr Trehan said while awareness level among people about heart-related problems was very low, majority of the people were also unaware of the measures that led to these.

Although there were several factors behind the increasing incidence of heart diseases, several of them were still under human control, he said. Proper diet and regular physical exercise were a must to remain healthy.

Changes in dietary habits and very less physical activity had led to the problem in a majority of cases. Living luxurious lifestyles and avoiding even walking some distance everyday and the preference for foods rich with oils, fats and proteins had increased the risk of heart ailments to a considerable extent, he said.

He said the quantity of sugar and fat intake should coincide with one's ability to do physical work or activity on a regular basis. Besides commercialisation, competition, negative approach, jealousy, tension and other psychological problems had led to higher stress levels among people which led to higher risks to the heart.

Dr Trehan suggested that the people above a certain age should be careful about their eating habits and must ensure they did some kind of exercise on a routine basis and should consult a physician, in case of any suspicion. He said smoking and eating pan masalas was also `dangerous' to a healthy heart.
