CAME on acute cardiac disorders

The Indian Medical Association, Rajpura, in association with the Mukat Hospital and Heart Institute, Chandigarh, organised a continuing medical education (CAME) at Rajpura today.

The programme was aimed at creating awareness about the latest international techniques adopted in managing acute cardiac disorders. A number of medical practitioners participated.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Sashi Jindal, consultant cardiac surgeon, dwelt on the “pitfalls in routine bypass surgery” and highlighted the new and better technique of “total arterial bypass conduits on beating heart”.

Dr R.K. Jaswal, senior consultant and interventional cardiologist, discussed the recent advances in the management of acute coronary syndromes. He said in the past, cardiologists were scared of managing acute coronary syndromes because of the higher risks. With the advancement in the hardware and drugs used in interventions, they were getting excellent results at very low risk of procedure. He said most of the interventions he was performing at Mukat Hospital were in the setting of coronary syndromes. These days, interventions in acute coronary syndromes could save innumerable lives which were lost in the past.

Dr A.N.Ghosh, consultant cardiac surgeon, spoke at length about “when to refer the patients of coronary artery disease to tertiary care centre”. In this, he highlighted the latest trends and international guidelines regarding proper referral of patients having coronary artery disease to advanced cardiac care centre for adequate evaluation and management.

Dr O.P.S. Kande,Chairman, IMA, Punjab Chapter was the chief guest.

PU team emerge runners-up

Basketball eves of Panjab University, Chandigarh, have emerged runners-up in the just concluded All-India Inter-Varsity Basketball Meet held at Kangra. The 12-member team returned last evening along with its coach, Mr M.M. Malhan of the Sports Authority of India.

Members of the team were: Nivedita Gupta (Captain), Sarita, Mandeep Brar, Harpreet Kaur, Babita, Kamaljit Kaur, Rajinder Kaur, Balwinder Kaur, Gaganpreet, Harinder, Rajwinder Kaur and Aruna Rani. Mr Malhan said it was after a gap of three years that the university team had displayed the scintillating performance.

He said three players, namely Mandeep Brar, Sarita and Kamaljit Kaur played well.

In the meet, the team played tough tie against the defending champions, Madras University, and lost by 49-56. But the team defeated Punjabi University, Patiala, and MGU, Kottayam, and lost to Kerala at a narrow margin of 45-47. But after the super league, PU went down fighting to Calicut at 37-58.

Handball meet

Manav Mangal High School, Sector 21, team entered the finals of the UT Inter-School Handball Meet held at GMSSS 21 here on Tuesday. In the semi-finals of the under-17 section, MMHS 21 beat Guru Gobind Singh Senior Secondary School, Sector 35 by 17-14, while in other semi-finals, DAVSSS, Sector 8, defeated GNPS, Sector 36 by 27-5.

Fencing meet

Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, and St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, jointly claimed the overall title in the UT Inter-School Fencing Championships for boys held at Shivalik Public School, here on Tuesday. In the girls’ section, Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, jointly claimed the overall trophy.

St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, defeated SD Public School, Sector 32, 2-0 to win the foil event for boys. Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, were jointly placed third. In the competition for girls, Shivalik School claimed the top spot followed by Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33. The third place went jointly to Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, and Sacred Heart School.

In the epee event for boys, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, beat St Stephen’s School 2-1 in the final. The third place in this event was jointly claimed by Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 46, and Sanjay Public School, Sector 44. Sacred Heart School won the epee event for girls while Shivalik School finished second.

In sabre, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, beat St Stephen’s School 2-0 to claim the title in the boys’ section. Sanjay Punjab School and Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 46, shared the third place.

Cricket and TT trials

The UT Education Department will hold the selection trials on November 22 at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32, to select UT under-19 girls cricket team. The trials for the UT table tennis team for under-14, 17 and 19 will also be held for boys and girls, respectively, on November 22 and 23 at the Sector 23 TT hall. This was stated by Mr Brahmjit Kalia, District Education Officer.

Hockey trials

Trials to pick probables for the Chandigarh team scheduled to take part in the Junior National Hockey Championship being held from December 1 to 10 near Hyderabad, will be held at the Sector 18 hockey stadium on November 15 at 3 p.m., according to Mr Yash Vohra, secretary, Chandigarh Hockey Association. Players born on or after January 1, 1984, are eligible.

New astroturf for hockey stadium

The 12-year-old astroturf at the Hockey stadium, Sector-42, will be replaced by March next year at a cost of Rs 1.75 crore. The new astroturf will also meet the latest standards laid down by the International Federation of Hockey (IFH). Internationally, hockey is played on astroturf.

The UT Administrator Lieut Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd), who has been taking keen personal interest in the project, revealed the above information to mediapersons at the Raj Bhavan on a function on Divali eve today. The new astroturf area will be bigger than the earlier one as the IFH had increased the field area.

For this, stands on one side will have to be broken. Part of the funding had been done by the Government of India, while some of the funds are being provided by the Chandigarh Administration, said the Director Sports-cum-Deputy Commissioner, Mr M. Ramsekhar. The astroturf at the Hockey stadium gains more importance as the Indian Junior team has just won the Junior World Cup in Australia.

With the Indian Hockey Federation also aiming at grooming the youngsters it will be boon. As many as 11 players in the World Cup winning side hail from Punjab. The cost of astroturf has been on the decline. When the project was planned, it cost about Rs 2 crore, but now it will cost Rs 1.75 crore.

Officials directed to be present in offices

Panchkula, November 13
Officials of the Panchkula District Administration have been ordered to be present in their respective offices before afternoon to listen to complaints of the general public. The officials were also asked to immediately look into complaints of corruption received by them.

The orders were issued by the Deputy Commissioner, Ms Jyoti Arora during the monthly meeting of the Public Relations and Grievance Redressal Committee, here today. The DC asked the officials, who have been deputed on Divali duty to remain vigilant. The Civil Surgeon was asked to keep a check on the sweet shops to prevent adulteration. All hospitals in the district have been asked to remain prepared to meet any eventuality during the festival season.

Taking a note of the complaint filed by residents of Ratpur Colony, Pinjore subdivision, against alleged encroachment on Panchyat land, Ms Arora asked the SDM, Kalka, to investigate the matter and file a report at the earliest. The SDO, Panchkula, was asked to look into the complaints of encroachment on public land in Garhi Kotaha village. The Forest Department was also asked to make payments to the labourers who planted trees in Basola Beat village, by November 20.

Acting on a complaint that the link road between Subhash Nagar and HMT had been left mid-way, the DC blacklisted the contractor, Ramnivas Bansal Hansi, and ordered the Public Works Department to complete the road by December 8. The Electricity Department was also asked to erect street lights along the road.
