National conference on cancer

Chandigarh, November 19
The 23rd national conference of the Association of Radiation Oncologists of India (cancer specialists) will be held at the PGI from November 22 to 25.

Dr S.C. Sharma, Head of the Department of Radiotherapy and chairman of the conference, stated in a press release that radiotherapy was an important part of multi-modality treatment of cancer and it played a predominant role in the management of various types of cancer.

Introduction of new techniques like radiosurgery and intensity modulated radiation therapy are useful not only in the treatment of cancer but in the management of the diseases also. All these treatments will form part of the discussion at the conference.

The Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on November 22 will be specially focused towards the students and junior radiation oncologists. The main focus of the CME will be management of cancer of prostate occurring in elderly people but will also address doctor-patient communication, which is the lifeline of good clinical practice.

Dr F.D. Patel, organising secretary of the conference, informed that as many as 400 delegates are attending the conference.

Painting contest on drug abuse, AIDS awareness held

As a part of the ongoing Sher-e-Punjab Lala Lajpat Rai martyrdom fortnight, the Servants of the People Society organised a painting competition on drug abuse, HIV\AIDS awareness and child health today.

In his presidential address, Prof Aditya Prakash, former Principal of the College of Architecture, said participation in competition was much more important than winning a prize .

Gp Capt P.S. Soni, Honorary Administrator, Servants of the People Society, highlighted the importance of Lala Lajpat Rai as a role model for the youth of the country. He called upon the people to carry forward the tradition set up by one of the greatest freedom fighters of modern India.

Ms Seema Bhalla, Interior Designer, Prof Ravinder Sharma from the College of Arts, Sector 10, Ms Meera Dham, Head Of the Department of Fine Arts, were the judges of the painting competition.

The first, second and third prizes were won by Simran Kaur of Shri Guru Harkishan Public School, Sector 40, Vijay Kumar, Government, Senior Secondary School, Sector 20-D and Ms Harpreet Kaur of Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36.

The consolation prizes were bagged by Ashwarya Dikshit of Manav Mangal School, Sector 21, Satinder Kaur of Guru Harkishan Public School, Sector 40-C, Ram Shankar, Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 20-D and Parvind of Government High School, Sector 24.

DAV school win basketball title

The winning team of DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, in UT Inter-School Basketball Meet.

Chandigarh, November 19
DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, clinched the basketball title in under-19 boys section of the UT Inter-School Basketball meet. The school defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, 68-47. The main scorers for winners were Balraj 20, Rajinder Pal 20, Vishal 8 and Manoj Kumar 8.

Volleyball team

The Chandigarh Volleyball Association has selected a 12-member UT volleyball team ( women) which will take part in the 31st National Games in Ludhiana on Tuesday. According to Mr BL Malhotra, secretary CVA, the team is: Kavita, Praveen, Mukta, Sapna, Poonam, Indu, Krishna, Babita, Promila, Shivani, Aman, Inderpreet Kaur. standby Priyanka. Mr Shiv Bedi from the Sports Authority of India will be the coach.

Football trials

The Chandigarh Football Association will hold the selection trials on November 24 to select 25 players for a coaching camp to select the UT junior team (boys) which will take part in the 38th Junior National Football Championship to be held at Jaipur from December 15 to January 3, 2002. According to Mr Ravinder Talwar, president, CFA, players born on or after January 1, 1983, will be eligible to take part.

Cricket tourney

In the under-14 final of the Fourth Blessed Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament played here, Morissey House won the final by beating O’Keeffe House by 121 runs, while in the under-16 final, the match between Morissey House and Edmund Rice was tied, as both teams had scored the same number of runs. But finally, the match was awarded to Edmund Rice house on the basis of their few wickets falling.

Carrom tournament

The First Saupin’s Inter-School Carrom Tournament will be held from November 30 to December 2 under the aegis of the Panchkula District Carrom Association. It will be held for the schools located in Panchkula district only. Entries close on November 26 at 739, Sector16, Panchkula, with Mr Satish Sharma. The trials to select the Panchkula district carrom team for Haryana and inter-district carrom tournament will also be held during the above meet.

ADMINISTRATION

Date for enrolment extended till December 12

Chandigarh, November 19
The Chandigarh Administration has extended the last date for submission of forms for enrolment as voters for the next Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). The last date will now be December 12, spokesperson of the Administration said tonight.

All eligible Keshdhari and Sehajdhari Sikhs, who fulfil the conditions of forms I and I-A, respectively, can submit their forms now. Only those persons who got themselves registered as voters in the electoral roll, which is under preparation, would be enfranchised in the next election of the SGPC. Persons on the electoral roll prepared at the time of the last elections of the SGPC will not be entitled to vote on that basis, a notification issued by the Deputy Commissioner says.

Forms are available in the DC’s office, Sector 17. For rural areas of Chandigarh the said forms could be deposited and obtained from halqa patwaris.
