Top-seeded Chatwinder Singh of Chandigarh scored his second victory when he disposed of Nakul Yadev 6-2, 6-2 while second-seeded Divij Sharan posted his second victory drubbing Honey Rana 6-0, 6-1. Barring eighth-seeded Varu Giri, all other players scored easy victories. Fifth-seeded Wrik Ganguly crushed Rathindra Kakati 6-2,6-0 while fourth-seeded Parantap Chaturvedi rushed past Prateek Kumar 6-1,6-2. With mostly players from Delhi slugging it out, in the absence of entries from other States of North India, the Zonal Championship has lost much of its interest. The interesting part, however, is that even the top-seeded Chatwinder of Chandigarh is a wild card entry.

Dr Vece Paes, coordinator of the tournament, had promised a star cast in the North Zone leg, but when the draw was cast, the top players were missing.

DDA orders or not, the show must go on
Nalini Ranjan

New Delhi, November 20
Despite the DDA order to stop immediately the illegal construction work at a 4,060-sq. metre site of this agency at Mayur Vihar Phase-II, the All-India Digamber Jain Society seems to be totally unfazed. The DDA had sent a letter to the society about two weeks back but construction work has not been stopped as yet.

Actually, five years’ back this society had applied to the DDA for the allotment of land to establish a senior secondary school at Dilshad Garden. This area falls under North-East District. Violating the rules, the DDA allotted the land at Mayur Vihar, Phase-II, for construction of a middle school in lieu of a senior secondary school. This area falls under East district. It is worth mentioning that on February 16,2001,the institutional branch of the DDA organised a meeting regarding fixation of norms for recognition as well as allotment of land to different levels of schools and it was decided that in future the Education Department would sponsor cases for a particular area along with giving the DDA the option to allot land in a nearby locality but within the same educational district.

Surprisingly, the All-India Digamber Jain Society was given this land about a month after this meeting. When well-known social worker G. Tyagi and other people of this area sent a letter of objection in this regard to the Urban Development Minister, Mr Anand Kumar, the DDA had no option but to issue an order for stopping the ongoing construction.

According to highly placed sources, an Essential Certificate (EC) is a must for any society in getting land for such a purpose, except the minority community. Despite not being included in this type of category, this society succeeded in getting this land without showing this certificate. When contacted in this regard the Chairman of the society Mr O.P. Jain, said due to an oversight on the part of the DDA they were suffering.
