MCD mulls over drug shortage
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 21
The shortage of life-saving medicines and total lack of infrastructure in the dispensaries and health centres run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was discussed threadbare at a meeting of the standing committee of the MCD today.

The patients are as a routine task asked to purchase medicines from the market, causing difficulties to residents of resettlement colonies. This is a result of the improper MCD system of distributing medicines and the accompanying basic infrastructure. The MCD has no proper arrangement to supply medicines to its dispensaries and health centres. When pharmacists of a particular centre go to the Health Department of the MCD for medicines the officer concerned reportedly harasses them.

The Commissioner of the corporation, Mr S.P. Aggarwal, said that now medicines would be supplied by the Health Department of the MCD itself.

Air India and Punjab and Sind Bank players vie for the ball in the Nehru Hockey cup final which the former won 3-2.

New Delhi, November 21
Air India, Mumbai came from behind to outwit Punjab and Sind Bank 3-2, and wrested the 38th Nehru Hockey Tournament title in a pulsating final at the Shivaji Stadium here today.

Bharat Petroleum beat Railway XI 4-3 to secure the third position. Junior India star Gagan Ajit Singh(2), Ajay Kumar and Deepak Sharma were the goal scorers for the winners while Bikramjit Singh scored all the three goals for Railways.

Playing fast and furious hockey in which no corners were asked and none given, Air India put up a better display to claim the title. Air India had won the title in 1995 and 1997, and were runners-up in 1994. Punjab and Sind Bank won the title in 1999 and were runners-up in 1998.

Air India received Rs 2,00,000 as prize money, while Punjab and Sind Bank got Rs 1,00,000.

The trend of the match was set at the very beginning, when both the teams went on an attacking spree. Punjab and Sind Bank tasted first blood through Sandeep Singh Ghuman, who, with a clean hit, converted a pass from the right, into a brilliant goal(1-0).

Air India mounted a counter attack within seconds, and fetched the equaliser when Inder Salaria’s shot on the run rebounded, goalkeeper A Edwards made a brave attempt to stop the ball, but it slipped out of his control, and Kishore Kumar, prowling like a vulture inside the goal area, shot home in a trice (1-1).

The Bankmen took the lead again, seven minutes later, when Harpreet Singh banged in, of a cross from the right by Baljit Singh Chandi. Before the din could die down, Air India were back to business and scored the equaliser through Lakhwinder Singh, who flicked in from close, after Tushar Khandekar’s cross from the right had beaten goalie Edwards hands.(2-2)

That was in the 15th minute. In the 23rd minute, Sanjiv Kumar missed the mark narrowly for Punjab and Sind Bank, and the teams shared the honours (2-2) at half time.

In the eighth minute of second half, Air India earned their first penalty corner, and captain Cornelius D’Costa sounded the board with a powerful hit (3-2).

The Bankmen made a desperate attempt to score the equaliser, but their moves were thwarted by the Air India defence, ably marshalled by skipper Cornelius D’Costa.

During the last eight minutes of the match, Punjab and Sind Bank were reduced to ten men as Yudhbir Singh was sent out with a red card, for repeatedly fowling Air India defender Kishore Kumar.

He had been shown the yellow card at the half time break.

Amarjit Singh (IHF Junior XI), Tushar Khandekar (Air India), Raziuddin (Rock Rovers, Chandigarh) and Sandeep Singh Ghuman (Punjab and Sind Bank) were awarded Rs 10,000 each for being the ‘most promising players.’ Gagan Ajit Singh of Bharat Petroleum was given the “Coolest Player Award” along with a refrigerator by Electrolux while the “Pepsi Penalty Corner Award” for the team achieving the “highest rate of penalty corner conversion” was given to Bharat Petroleum XI.

The Sardar Daljit Singh Cup for the “Most Promising Team” went to IHF Juniors while the ONGC Fair Play Trophy went to Navy XI.

The Hero Honda Hardline Trophy and a cash prize of Rs 50,000 was given to Bharat Petroleum while the Lt. Gen. Harbaksh Singh Trophy and a cash prize of Rs 10,000 were awarded to Corps of Signals.

President of the Veterans Hockey Association Bhupinder Singh Suri, donated Rs 10,000 each to IHF Junior XI and Rock Rovers.

Weightlifting team returns with just one medal
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, November 21
The ten-member Indian weightlifting team virtually drew a blank in the World Championship held in Turkey as they could win just one medal, in the Jerk category. The medal was won by Sunaina of Punjab.

Trikina Gopal, who lifted 157.5kg—ten kg less than her home performance—in Turkey is likely to give some fight in the weightlifting event of the National Championship, beginning in Patiala tomorrow, to Olympian Sanamacha Chanu.

The lifting event is likely to be dominated by women from Manipur, though most of them are employed with the Central Reserve Police Force.(CRPF)

Sanamacha Chanu is all set for a medal in the 48kg while Nandani, who lifted 185 kg at Turkey to be placed seventh, is expected to win as she has lifted 190 kg a number of times.

T Muthu, who had lifted 245 kg at Turkey, to be placed 10th in the 56 kg, will be challenged by Rajbir Singh of Punjab.

Sunaina, who was placed fourth in the 58 kg class, and missed a medal in the overall category, though she won the bronze in jerk, is a medal prospect in the National Games.

Her total of 200 in Turkey was encouraging, but it was achieved in a field bereft of lifters from Thailand, Indonesia, Mynmar, United States and Korea.

Experienced Pratima Kumar is a sure shot for a medal in the 63 kg category, while in the men’s section, Arjuna Awardee Satish Rai, and the ‘strongest man of India’ Dalvir Singh, who holds all the national records in the plus 105 kg category, should strike it rich.

The National Games offer an opportunity to those who missed the bus for the World Championship to prove their worth.

Ballabgarh throws up 256 jobs in 2 yrs
Bijendra Ahlawat
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, November 21
The problem of unemployment, which becomes a main issue on the agenda of political parties before elections, normally takes a backseat after the elections are held. A glaring example in this connection is the employment office at Ballabgarh town where only 256 youths could get jobs in the past about two years.

While the number of jobless youths whose names have been registered in unemployment offices in the region has been in thousands, about one-tenth or even less than that get an opportunity to join a job or attend an interview for the post of his choice in a year, according to official sources.

The employment exchange at Ballabgarh town, which caters to a large area of the town, could provide job to only 256 persons in the past 22 months. The district has one employment office in each of the subdivisions. About 2,070 names were entered in the Ballabgarh office between January 1,2000, and December 31,2000.

The situation is more or less the same at every such centre. The reported decision of the state government earlier this year to wind up some of the exchanges led to a panic among the unemployed youths who suspected that the employment opportunities could further squeeze and the applicants could face harassment in getting even their names entered in the official list.

It is learnt that the employment offices normally cut off the names of the candidates who fail to renew their cards every year. While the state government provides unemployment allowance to the tune of Rs 50,Rs 75 and Rs 100 for candidates having plus two, graduation and postgraduation degrees several of them do not become eligible for such an allowance due to various conditions attached to it.

Only 13 candidates are reportedly getting unemployment allowance at the Ballabgarh office. The exchanges, which were known to provide opportunities for government jobs earlier, have started giving information about vacancies in private organisations and institutions.
