Talk on changing role of radiotherapy

An active interaction of new ideas and techniques in the care of cancer through radiation took place on the second day of the ongoing national conference of the Association of Radiation Oncologists at the PGI here today.

Dr G.K. Rath from the AIIMS, New Delhi, delivered the Dr P.K. Haldar memorial oration. He highlighted the present status of radiotherapy facilities in India. He stressed that although India had some of the oldest as well as the latest techniques, these were not fairly distributed through the nation. Similar was the case with medical physicists and medical technologists.

The Dr Soloman Padam Singh oration was delivered by Dr Alan Horwich from Royal Marsten Hospital, London. He spoke on the changing role of radiotherapy in the management of testicular seminima.

Dr K.A. Dinshaw, Director, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai and Mr P.S. Negi, Chief Physicist, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, New Delhi, chaired a symposium on conformal therapy and intensity modulated radiation therapy and highlighted the advantages of the two techniques.

900 students join polio rally

Chandigarh, November 23
About 900 students of Government High School, Sector 40-A took part in a polio awareness rally organised by the school authority in collaboration with the Health Department, Chandigarh Administration, and the Citizen Awareness Group here today.

The rally that started from the school premises and went through various sectors was led by headmaster Bahadur Singh. The rally was flagged off by Dr Rameshwer Chander, Director, Health Services, Chandigarh.

Rally by GMCH employees union

The PGI Employees Union showed its support with the Government Medical College and Hospital Employees Union at the lunch hour rally of the GMCH employees held here today.

Among other leaders of the employees, Mr Ashwani Munjal, general secretary of the PGI Employees Union, addressed the employees of the GMCH at the rally. The GMCH employees are protesting against the alleged wrong suspension of two nurses of the hospital and the illegal and arbitrary acts of the nursing superintendent.

Deependu, Surbhi Mahajan declared best athletes

Chandigarh, November 23
Mount Carmel School, Chandigarh and SAS Nagar, today organised annual sports day on the school premises, Sector 47. The students participated in various events like carrying the ball, elephant race, finding the coin, collecting balls, monkey race, one legged race, hockey race, skipping race, frog race, train race, spoon lemon race, sack race, three legged race, pot race, slow cycling, dribbling basketball in single lane, 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres races, long jump, high jump, shot put, relay race. Some of the events were also conducted for the staff members of the school. Charles Samuel, Principal of the school, unfurled the school flag followed by an impressive march past by the contingents of the four houses of the school led by its head girl, head boy, sports leaders, house captains and house vice-captains. The Principal took the salute.

Mr Brahmjit Kalia, DEO, UT Administration, presided over the function and gave away the prizes. As many as 165 medals and prizes were awarded to the winners of various events while 110 students awarded for their 100 per cent attendance.

Deependu and Surbhi Mahajan were declared the best boy and best girl athlete respectively.

SGGS-26 win

SGGS College, Sector 26, retained the men team championship in the 14th Chandigarh State Table Tennis Championship played here today at Sector 23 TT hall. SGGS paddlers won all their league matches. In the league matches, they beat RBI team at 3-2 while in another tie, they outplayed AG Audit, Haryana, at 3-1.

Selection trial

The Chandigarh Kho-Kho Association will hold the selection trials to select the UT State Kho-Kho team for the forthcoming national championship. These trials will be held on December 3 at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35. Earlier, the association had decided to conduct the state kho-kho meet from November 24 but due to the ongoing National Games. This was stated by Mr Harjit Singh, president of the association, in a press release here today.

Tug-of-war teams

Paramjeet Singh and Satinder Kaur will lead the Chandigarh men and women tug-of-war teams for the forthcoming senior national tug-of-war championship to be held at Nakodar (Punjab) from November 27 to 30.

The teams are — (boys) Paramjeet (captain), Amrik Singh, Arshdeep Singh, Sunil Kumar, Ram Kumar, Sukhpreet Singh, Jatinder Singh, Narinder Singh, Harkeerat Singh, Rakesh Kumar; (women) — Satinder Kaur (captain), Sabina, Meena Kumari, Neelu, Meera Thakur, Pinky Rani, Sangeeta, Kiran Bala, Sapna Chauhan, Neelam and Mamta Sharma.

Mr Rajpal Singh, Ajit Singh, SP Chauhan and Loveleen Kaur will be the officials of the team.

Admn order on sale of spices, condiments

Chandigarh, November 23
The Director Health Services-cum-Food Health Authority, UT, has directed the general public that no person shall sell powdered spices and condiments in a loose condition, and any person violating this rule will be punished in accordance with the law, including seizure of articles by food inspector on the spot.

The DHS has brought to the notice of the shopkeepers/grinder units that the packed spices and condiments shall carry a label as required under Rule 32 of the PFA rules framed under the PFA Act.

The DHS has also directed that all grinders will satisfy the food inspector on the spot through documents that the spices are not for public sale and the material belongs to the customer which has been sent for grinding purposes for their own consumption and in case it is not proved, appropriate action will be taken action against the defaulter.

In case the manufacturer is not a packer or a bottler, the name and complete address of the packing or bottling unit should be specified on the label. In case the manufacturer or the company from and on whose behalf the packing or bottling is being done, the label shall carry the complete address along with the written authority or both.

The DHS has also ordered that the shopkeepers and mill-owners will display on the notice board that loose spices are not sold here.
