3 children die in Pak shelling

Four persons, including three children, were killed and eight others injured when Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing in Uri and Karnah sectors along the LoC in north Kashmir yesterday. Eight houses were damaged while over 12 head of cattle were also killed in these incidents, reports reaching here said.

Three children were killed and six others, including three women, injured in Karnah sector of Kupwara district when Pakistani troops fired from across the border yesterday. Over 12 head of cattle perished and at least eight houses damaged in the area. The cross-border shelling created panic in the area as schoolchildren had to abandon examinations in different schools around the area.

One person, identified as Ghlam Mohiuddin was killed at Hathlangoo in Uri sector along the LoC in Baramulla district. Two others, including a woman, were injured when the shells landed in and around the populated area.

Senior civil administration officials from both districts of Baramulla and Kupwara today rushed to the affected areas to take stock of the situation and assess damage. The authorities, it may be mentioned here, have already taken up a scheme of the construction of underground bunkers in the populated areas along the LoC during the past couple of years.

The bunkers have been sanctioned for safety of the residents in case of shelling. Of 790 underground bunkers at the two border districts of north Kashmir, 650 have already been constructed. The work on other bunkers is reported to be in progress.

SRINAGAR: Four persons, including two militants, were killed in the Kashmir valley during the past 24 hours.

Militants also fired upon a guard of a political activist at Wanpoo Kulgam last evening. However, no one was injured, an official spokesman said.

Security forces killed two militants at Garend in the central Kashmir district of Badgam during a search operation last evening.

Two AK assault rifles, nine magazines, six hand grenades, a wireless set, two pouches and 308 rounds were recovered from the slain militants. One slain militant was identified as Ghulam Ahmed Malik, alias Gazi.

The police recovered a bullet-ridden body at Bari Nambal Khanyar.

One person was killed in a blast at Zeewan.

Security forces recovered three hand grenades, five remote control devices, 92 detonators and 38 rounds from a militant hideout at Tarzoo Sopore last evening. However, no one was arrested in this connection, the spokesman said.

An AK rifle, one pistol, 27 UBGL grenades, six RPG bombs, five magazines, a wireless set, and over 150 rounds were recovered by the forces during a search operation in the Mangota area of Rajouri district. UNIBack
