Tribune News Service

SAS Nagar, November 28
The Jan Shikshan Sansthan today organised a training programme in collaboration with the Human Resource Development Cell of the Punjab Public Health Department, for technicians.

Inaugurating the workshop, Mr J.R. Khullar of the HRD Cell of the Punjab Public Health Department said it was government’s commitment to supply safe drinking water to everyone. The success of water supply management, particularly in rural areas, depended on quick maintenance and repair of pumps for which community participation was needed, he said.

Mr Dildar Khan, director, Jan Shikshan Sansthan, emphasised the need of public participation in making the rural water supply scheme a success in terms of distribution, maintenance and repair of equipment and conservation of water. This was possible only if the community actively participated in managing the rural water supply in coordination with the officials of this department.

Mr Rajesh Jain, a technical expert, said continuous use of the water pumps called for regular maintenance for better efficiency. He explained to the participants the correct way to maintain water pumps and putting their parts together. He said a responsible operator could contribute immensely to the success of rural water supply schemes.

Prof Asha Sethi spoke about impurities in drinking water and their effect on human health. She stressed the need to create awareness among people about water conservation so that water table could be maintained. She said water contamination was caused as adequate measures were not taken for proper disposal of industrial and domestic waste.
