As a significant part of its commitment, the Royal Challenge Golf and Club Accessories, the premium brand of golf equipment and accessories from Shaw Wallace, will sponsor India’s flagship golfing event, the US dollar 300,000 Indian Open, for the next five years, till 2006. In addition, Royal Challenge will also sponsor a four-leg national Royal Challenge Grand Prix for the first time in India. Significantly, the Indian Open will return to the Delhi Golf Club after a gap of seven years. History was created in Delhi in 1991 when Ali Sher became the first Indian in 25 years to win the event.

Ali Sher’s performance inspired a whole generation of golfers—Jeev Milkha Singh, Jyoti Randhawa, Arjun Atwal, Gaurav Ghei, Feroz Ali and Arjun Singh, among others, who have distinguished themselves in professional golf in India and abroad. This includes three consecutive Indian wins at the Indian Open itself—by Feroz Ali in 1998, Arjun Atwal in 1999 and Jyoti Randhawa in 2000.0.

Last year, Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee broke the winning spree of the Indians at home when he held back a strong international and Indian challenge to win the title.

Announcing the landmark association between Shaw Wallace and the IGU, the president of the IGU, Mr Raghu Modi, said, “The IGU is delighted to announce that Shaw Wallace has come forward with a very comprehensive plan to support golf in India”.

He said for the first time in the century-old history of golf in India Shaw Wallace would not just sponsor the Indian Open, but also tie-in a programme that encompassed four national events as well as significant efforts to make premier quality golf equipment accessible to aspiring golfers and also educate them on the sport. “We are confident that the company will take the game to greater heights and the Royal Challenge Indian Open will become a bigger and better event”, he added.

Mr M.R. Chhabaria, Managing Director of Jumbo Group and Shaw Wallace Group of Companies, said, “The association will encompass all aspects of the sport over the next five years. We are proud to associate Royal Challenge with a sport that shares its values of rare character and spirit. We are also happy to bring back the Indian Open to the DGC after seven years”.

The Indian Open will offer a prize money of approximately Rs 1.5 crore with the winner getting about Rs 25 lakh, making it the richest golf event in South Asia. The participating field is expected to comprise 100 foreign players and more than 40 Indian professionals. The Royal Challenge Indian Open will be the 38th edition of the event, making it the longest running annual international fixture.

Mr Ravi Krishnan of the International Management Group (IMG) said, “Golf is the foundation of the IMG’s growth and success. In the nearly four decades since Arnold Palmer became the IMG’s first golf client, the sport has become a truly global industry, largely shaped by the IMG’s unique skill in client representation, event marketing, and television representation, production and distribution”. Mr Ravi Krishnan said in 2000 all four major championships were won by IMG clients as the PGA Championship, the British Open and the US Open were won by Tiger Woods and the Augusta Masters by Vijay Singh.
