Artificial limbs fitted

Ludhiana, December 5
Bharat Vikas Parishad, a charitable trust, organised a camp to provide artificial limbs to the polio-affected and orthopedically-challenged persons. The camp was inaugurated by Mr R.L. Kalsia, the Municipal Commissioner recently and will conclude on December 16.

The secretary of the Trust informed that on odd dates like December 1,3, 5 of the camp measurements of the limbs to be fitted will be taken. On the even numbered dates like December 2,3,4 the limbs will be fitted. Technicians were working overtime to see that the 50 odd patients who came in for measurements, should find their limbs ready. The trust wants to provide lower and upper limbs and calipers to more than 450 patients during the camp.

Earlier, the trust had organised a camp for polio victims in Krishna Charitable Hospital, Model Town in October. More than 2,000 patients had attended the camp. The doctors had short-listed 433 patients. They were operated upon with the undertaking by the Trust that those patients would be fitted with artificial limbs.

The Bharat Vikas Parishad has undertaken the task of making Punjab a disability free state with the help of Red Cross, it has provided artificial limbs to 15,000 persons since it came into existence in 1996. Quite a few districts of Punjab, like Gurdaspur and Mansa have been free of disabled people thanks to Bharat Vikas Parishad.

Sports festival from Dec 6

The Gill Sports Club and Gram Panchayat, Dhamot, will organise the 21st Captain Manjit Singh Gill Memorial Tournament from December 6 to 9 at Dhamot village, about 20 km from here. According to a press note issued by Mr Randhir Singh Gill, president of the club, during this four-day sports festival, competitions will be held in kabaddi, cricket, football, hockey apart from bullock cart races and dog races.

The organising committee will also honour players belonging to the village who had excelled at the national-level tournaments. They include Mr Kartar Singh Canada (swimming), Prof Gurcharan Singh Gill (hockey), Mr Gurpreet Singh (cycling), Mr Yodhvir Singh Basanta (athletics), Mr Gurmeet Singh Gill (hockey), Ms Paramjit Kaur (hockey), Mr Balwinder Singh Gill (kabaddi), Mr Lakhbir Singh Gill (hockey) and Ms Rupinder Kaur (athletics).

Cricket meet from Dec 8

Ludhiana, December 5
Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, will organise the inaugural Coronation Cup Cricket Tournament from December 8 at Phillaur, according to a press note issued by Mr D.R. Bhatti, ADGP, and Director of the academy. The matches will be of 25 overs, while the final will be of 30 overs a side and played on Saturdays and Sundays.

Entries close on December 6 at 4.30 p.m. with Mr P.K. Sinha, Deputy Director, PPA, and general secretary of the organising committee at the reception gate. The winners will get a cash prize of Rs 11,000 and the runners up will get Rs 5,100 in addition to the trophies.

Cricket tourney

Shaheed Bhagat Singh Cricket Club organised the Fourth Cricket Tournament at Nankana Sahib Public School grounds here on Wednesday. It was inaugurated by Mr J. P. Singh Makkar, vice-president of the Punjab National Bank Staff Union, Punjab. He donated Rs 1,100 to the club. In total, 24 cricket teams participated in the tournament. Thukral Club won the match against Bharthia Cricket Club by 50 runs.
