Punjab, Haryana told to pay wages to UT staff
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 11
The Chandigarh Administration has officially asked the Punjab and Haryana Governments to pay the wages of about 70 employees of the Chandigarh Administration working with the two states.

These employees have been drawing wages from the Administration while working with the two states.

This was highlighted in these columns on November 13. If the states did not pay their wages, the employees would be called back, a source said, adding that the issue would be discussed at the forthcoming co-ordination meeting between the two states and the UT.

These employees cost the Administration about Rs 1 crore annually, but their services are being used by Punjab and Haryana. None of the UT officials have bothered to call back these employees, working as sweepers and lift operators and in the horticulture wing.

These employees are working in the Civil Secretariate for the past 35 years.

The UT Administration has never had any of its offices inside the Secretariat building and so there is no justification for its employees to be working in the building.

Senior official were not aware that the Administration had maintained a strength of about 70 employees in the Secretariat and no one had bothered to check what work they were doing or to withdraw their services.

Not even the audit people had got a wind of this or they would have written a stinker, said a source.
