Mala finishes fifth in Macao Marathon
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, December 11
Veteran woman marathoner Mala Honnatti finished fifth in the Macao International Marathon 2001 in the above 45 years’ category. Mala, who has won the veteran’s event of the Rath Marathon several times since 1991, is a mountaineer of repute.

Her trip to Macao was sponsored by Reliance Industries Ltd, Bombay, and her fifth place finish was a creditable achievement, considering the fact that the cream of runners from Asia and Europe had participated in the international marathon. “But for the hot and humid weather of the Macao island and the many flyovers I could have done better and finished among the first three”, Mala said on her return. Mala not only trains hard herself, but also trains other promising marathon runners too.

Rigzin Angmo, who won the Rath Marathon in 1995, and clocked her career-best timing of 2:45.8 hours, was trained by Mala. Mala, who has been mostly concentrating on the half marathon, now plans to train her guns at the full marathon. A former record holder in 3000 and 10,000 metres, Mala had won a bronze medal in the Asian Championship held in Singapore in 1992.

A banker by profession, Mala is determined to do well in the senior marathon circuit in the coming months.
