Guru Nanak Dev University champs in North Zone hockey New Delhi, December 12 Guru Nanak Dev topped with five points to wrest the title, while Punjab University, with four points, took the runners-up position. Delhi University beat Punjabi University, Patiala 1-0 to claim the third position. All the four Universities have qualified for the All-India Inter-University Hockey Championship, to be held at Jiwaji University, Madhya Pradesh. GNDU were guilty of muffing their chances though it were they who took the lead when Sarabjeet scored off a penalty corner in the 16th minute. But GNDU muffed two more penalty corners before the interval, and failed to consolidate the advantage of scoring an early goal. Punjabi University scored the equaliser eight minutes into the second half when Maninder Singh hit home. Thereafter, the teams battled it out mostly in the mid-field to share the points. Delhi University, after wasting a couple of chances early in the match, scored the match-winner mid-way through the first half when skipper Prabhakar found the mark. Last year’s All-India University champions Meerut and runners-up Jamia Millia, Delhi had failed to make it to the last four. Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) president KPS Gill presided over the closing function while Delhi Finance Minister Mahinder Singh Saathi gave away the prizes. Classic watches sponsored the championship.Mr Gill observed that other Universities should emulate GNDU by providing astro-turf to the players, as synthetic turf was necessary for the betterment of hockey in colleges. |

Mizoram School lift Subroto
Cup New Delhi, December 12 Danny was the star of the Mizo school's triumph as he struck once in each half to lift the cup. The Army boys tried to match the speed of the Mizo boys, but ran into a solid rock defence, and their moves fizzled out like that. Air Chief Marshal AY Tipnis PVSM AVSM VM ADC, Chief of the Air Staff, and chairman of the Subroto Society, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes. Manish Maithani was given the best junior player award and a cash prize of Rs 7,500 while Danny was adjudged the highest scorer and was awarded a LML Adreno FX Bike. |

Mukesh, Dinesh shine in Servo Masters
Golf New Delhi, December 12 While Dinesh Kumar’s team tallied 109 points, Mukesh Kumar’s effort earned his team a second place finish at 105. Uttam Singh Mundy and team finished third at 104 points. The Pro-Am was played on a Stableford format where the pro score was compulsory and the two best out of three amateur cards aggregated with the professional’s score over 18 holes formed the team total. Dinesh, as the professional in the winning team, earned Rs 5,000 while Mukesh and Mundy got Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively. Mukesh Kumar, with 41 points, returned the best individual score by a pro to win Rs 2500 while the best individual stableford score by an amateur was won by G Bordoloi, who tallied 40 points. The star attraction in the 25-strong field was Order of Merit leader and India No. I Mukesh Kumar. Mukesh was joined by twice Indian Open winner Ali Sher, 1998 Open winner Feroz Ali, Honda-Siel PGA champion Uttam Singh Mundy, Rookie of the Year 2000 Harmeet Kahlon, Rookie of the Year 2001 Rahul Ganapathy , defending champion, Sanjay Kumar and Rohtas Singh and Asian PGA Tour regulars Digvijay Singh and Amit Dube. Nike, the official suppliers of the Golf Tour, presented each member of the winning team with a gift hamper, in addition
to which the amateurs in each of the top three teams. |

Sanamacha Chanu finishes second in Police
Games New Delhi, December 12 In the 53 kg category for women, Sukhvir Kaur of CRPF won the gold, Mani Tombi Devi, also of CRPF, took the silver while Kashmir Kaur of CISF won the bronze. In the men’s 77kg event, Virender Singh of CRPF won the gold, Narender Singh of Punjab won the silver and K Guru of CRPF the bronze. Vikky Bhatt of Punjab had won the gold in the 56kg event. In Judo, Ashok Kumar and Satish Badsar, both of BSF, had won the gold in the open and 100kg respectively. |
IN PARLIAMENT New Delhi, December 12 The Bill had been introduced and the shifting of Haj Headquarters from Mumbai to Delhi would be subject to consideration and approval of Parliament, the minister said. On the increasing number of car thefts in the Capital, the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Mr Vidyasagar Rao, informed the Rajya Sabha that 1,037 of the 3,719 cars stolen till November 30 this year were recovered by the Delhi Police. The recovery percentage for the whole country during the current year as per the database maintained by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) was 25.17 per cent, he said. The minister said that with a view to check the sale and purchase of stolen vehicles, the NCRB had set up a Motor Vehicles Verification Counter in New Delhi. The counter provided information to the general public on whether a stolen vehicle had been recovered in any part of the country and whether the second-hand vehicle, which was proposed to be purchased, was a stolen one or was involved in any other crime, the minister told the House. Another such counter was opened by the NCRB at Gurgaon on August 16, 2001 and the government had accorded its approval for setting up of 20 more such counters in sixteen states and union territories, the minister said. On other crimes, six criminals belonging to the Bhupendra Tyagi gang were arrested by the Delhi Police on May 4, 2001 and arms and ammunition, bullet-proof jackets, mobile phones and counterfeit currency of Rs 25,000 were seized from them, Mr Rao in a reply to a separate question said. These criminals were engaged by the ISI of Pakistan, he said. Besides, during the current year (up till November 3O, the Delhi Police had apprehended 11 terrorists trained in Pakistan, of whom five were Pakistani nationals, and one terrorist trained in Afghanistan, the minister said. Replying to a separate question, he said that 500 women prisoners had been lodged in the women’s jail, i.e. Central Jail No. 6A, Tihar, as on December 6, 2001, as against its capacity of 400 prisoners. Though the majority of woman detenues were undertrials, none of them had served sentences for a period which was more than the term they were liable to serve, if convicted, the Minister of State for Home Affairs said. Seventeen special courts had been organised for the prisoners, including women prisoners, since the first such court was organised on May 13, 2000 in the Tihar Court Complex. Eleven woman prisoners had been released by the special courts so far, the Minister told the House. In reply to another question, the minister said that while there had been no reports about the increase in ISI activities in the Mewat area or participation of people of the area in favour of the Taliban, some cases of espionage had been detected. Action had been taken under relevant provisions of law against those involved, the House was told. |

Land, property records to be computerised New Delhi, December 12 The proposal for computerisation of sub-registrar offices in all the nine revenue districts in two phases has been formulated and would be placed for approval before the Cabinet soon. Stating that the computerisation of land and property records was the need of the hour, Minister for Revenue and Development, Haroon Yusuf expressed the optimism that the Cabinet will approve it soon. In the first phase, land and property records of all the nine district will be prepared and in the second phase they would be available online. A report for land record computerisation prepared by a three-member team headed by the Divisional Commissioner, G. S. Patnaik. The entries would include registration of wills, special and general power of attorney. As a pilot exercise, this work will be started in two districts and would be completed in six months. In the second phase, the records would be available online, which would facilitate transparent availability of information. This would facilitate the buyers, tenants and licencees to search ownership titles, genuineness of property deals from Sub-Registrar office or Computer Imaging Centre of the Department rather than getting trapped by property dealers. The three-member committee including Mr G. G. Saxena, Deputy Commissioner, North-East and Mr Rajiv Verma, Deputy Commissioner, West, prepared the report. |
