Conference on diabetes

Chandigarh, December 13
A four day national conference on diabetes— RSSDI-2001— is being organised at the PGI from December 14 to 17, 2001.

Being organised by the Department of Medicine and Allied specialisation, PGI, the conference will include a day long Continuing Medical Education programme (CME) on December 14.

As many as 400 delegates are likely to participate in the conference. Three books and a souvenir will be released during the conference.

Dr O.N. Nagi rejoins as Dean

Dr O.N. Nagi, Head, Department of Orthopaedics, PGI, joined his duties again as Dean, PGI, here today. This was confirmed by the Director PGI. He was reinstated as Dean following orders of the Supreme Court yesterday, to grant interim stay to his removal orders.

Dr Nagi had to resign earlier late last month as Dean PGI following the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court quashing his appointment as Dean.

DHS’s warning to traders

Chandigarh, December 13
The UT Director Health services has issued a warning to the traders in the city who deal with food articles to be careful and not refuse to give samples to food inspectors as in accordance with Section 16 of the PFA Act any person who refuses to give samples for testing to the food inspector was liable to prosecuted.

Such a person is liable to be punished with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than six months but which may extend to three years and with a fine of not less than Rs 1,000.

North Zone (IA & AD) cricket final today

AG (Punjab) will take on AG (Haryana) in the final of the North Zone (IA and AD) Cricket Tournament to be played tomorrow at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8.

In the first semi-final played today, AG, (Punjab) defeated AG, (UP) by 118 runs while in the second semifinal, AG, (Haryana) were declared winners as after playing their first innings , defending champions Delhi, Audit, walked out when the hosts were 14 for no loss and only 10 balls had been bowled. The Delhi team had earlier protested against one of the decisions against Haryana which was overruled by umpires.

Brief scores: First match: AG (Punjab): 240 for seven in 40 overs (Randhir Nain 66, R.P. Singh 64, Jaswant Rai 26, M.P. Singh 26, Rajat Yadav 2 for 52.

AG (UP): 123 all out in 29.2 overs (Shahnawaz 21, Jaswant Rai 3 for 30, M.P. Singh 2 for 22).

Second match: Delhi, Audit:148 for nine in 34 overs (K.S. Rana 20, Neel Mani 17, Surinder 3 for 22, Parveen Sharma 2 for 31, Satnam 2 for 30). AG (Haryana): 14 for no loss in 1.4 overs.

The final will be played tomorrow at 9.30 a.m.

Basketball meet

DAV College, Sector 10, GGD SD College, Chandigarh, and Panjab University Campus, Chandigarh, won their respective matches in the Panjab University Inter-College Inter-zonal basketball ‘A’ Division Men Tournament played on league basis here today. The results of various matches are:

PU Campus, Chandigarh, b Government College, Ludhiana, 77-65 (47-42). Top scorers: winners — Amanpreet 23, Sarharpreet 19, Harkanwar 14, Dinesh 13; losers — Amit Prashar 23, Arjinder 13, Ravi Kumar 11.

Football team

Vikramjeet Singh will lead the Chandigarh Junior Football team which will take part in the 38th Junior National Football championship to be held at Jaipur from December 15.

Other members of the team are: Raj Kumar, Mansa Ram, Gobind Thapa, Sumer Singh, Ravinder, Ankit, Gopal Thapa, Kartik, Harjinder, Harpreet, Bhupinder, Vinay, Ajay Pal, Jatinder, C Roy, Dhruv, Manoj, Paras and Jatinder. BL Ganguly and C.P. Malik will accompany the team as manager and coach, respectively.

Golf Club poll: 5 Armymen on Sandhu’s panel

The 11 member panel led by Mr Ravi Sandhu, who is one of the two presidential candidates for elections to the Golf Club here, comprises five armymen.

In the news item “its canvassing time at Chandigarh Golf Club” the name of Col M.S. Narula was inadvertently left out of the panel for executive members led by Mr Sandhu. This means the number of armymen in his panel is five and not four as mentioned in the news report. The five armymen on Mr Sandhu’s panel are Col S.S. Boparai, Col J.S. Panag, Col Iqbal Singh, Col M.S. Narula and Brig D.S. Dhillon.

The 10-member panel of the executive led by Mr Tegbir (Gogi) Sibia also has Ms Jaishree Thakur as the woman contestant. His panel also has five armymen. The total number of candidates contesting the 11 seats to the executive committee are 21. Besides, this, the direct elections to the post of President will be held. Other than elected ones, the immediate past captain of the club and immediate past president will be automatically nominated.

Panel for single-window clearance for IT park

An Empowered Committee which will deal with single-window clearance for all aspects relating to the allotment of land in the upcoming IT park was formed today by the Chandigarh Administration.

The Chairman of the committee will be the Secretary, Information Technology, Mr Karan A. Singh. The committee will be scrutinising applications, recommending allotment of land, ensuring timely sanction of building plans, timely registration with Software Technology Park of India (STPI), timely release of power connection, water and sewerage connection, coordination with the telecom authorities and the Government of India for its Information Technology (IT) Park under construction at Kishangarh.

The committee will function as a single-window clearance system for all regulatory clearances required for the proposed Park. The committee also comprises the Estate Officer, Mr M. Ramsekhar, the Joint Secretary (Finance), Mr K.A.P. Sinha, Chief Architect, Mr Sarabjeet Singh, the Chief Engineer, Mr Puranjeet Singh, the Director, Information Technology, Mr Vivek Atray, and the Additional Director, STPI, SAS Nagar, Mr Sanjay Tyagi, as members.

Meeting of police officials

Panchkula, December 13
The district police convened a high-level meeting of senior officials to discuss the plan of action to be taken against those plying illegal taxis.

The meeting was attended by the District Transport Officer, Mr Jagtar Singh, the ASP, Mr Vikas Arora, and the District Inspector, Mr Ishwar Singh. The SP, Mr Manoj Yadav, presided over the meeting. It was decided that a special drive against those plying taxis, maxi cabs and other vehicles without permit or valid documents would begin from December 15.

Warning the violators, Mr Yadav said they had been given with sufficient time to get their documents completed. He asked them to ensure that the vehicles were not overloaded and follow speed limits and park their vehicles at earmarked places.
