For most government employees, mega-weekends with a string of holidays on one account or the other are much awaited. One such mega-weekend lasting five days starts tomorrow. All an employee needs to do is to take leave on Tuesday and turn up for work only the next Thursday. SHO sent to Police Lines

The Station House Officer of Mani Majra police station, Inspector Sukh Pal Singh Rana, has been sent to the Police Lines for dereliction of duty. The orders were issued by the UT SSP, Mr Parag Jain after he visited the police station today.

Police to keep dossiers on councillors
Chandigarh, December 14
The Chandigarh Police is believed to have initiated a process to maintain confidential personal dossiers on elected members of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. It is understood that this decision has come in the wake of the inability of the local police to come up with requisite information following reports during the recently concluded MC electoral process that some persons had been associated with financial irregularities.

3 held for selling train tickets on black market
Chandigarh, December 14
The Railway Police Force has nabbed three persons for allegedly selling train tickets, at premium. The three are Santosh Kumar, Hoshiar Rawat and Jairam Das. Confirming this, Mr Nirmal Singh, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner, Ambala, said the three were arrested under Section 143 of the Indian Railway Act.

Two liquor smugglers held
Zirakpur, December 14
Two liquor smugglers were arrested while carrying 160 cases of liquor by the police at a naka on the Chandigarh-Patiala highway in Chhat village late last night.

Accident victim succumbs to injuries

In a hit-and-run case, a scooterist, Sarmukh Singh, succumbed to his injuries after being hit by an unknown vehicle near the Housing Board Chowk last night. He had been rushed to the PGI in a serious condition. The police has registered a case.

HC orders status quo on booth construction

Taking up an application filed by SAS Nagar’s anti-encroachment committee through president N.S. Minhas, alleging construction of pucca booths in place of a rehri market in phase 3B1 of SAS Nagar on land meant for a primary school, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the maintenance of status quo.

Lawyers observe strike

The nostalgia of Pahari art came alive at the art gallery of Government Museum in Sector 10 today. In evidence was a rare collection of beautifully-recreated pieces of art revived by the Delhi Crafts Council. The day was all about the magic of Chamba rumals, introduced as “embroidered paintings.”

The 29th annual conference of the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India started at the PGI here today. Inaugurating the conference, Dr Suraj Bhan, Governor, Himachal Pradesh, stated that diabetes was a disease of the inactive and the lethargic.

Impersonation in the name of excellence
Chandigarh, December 14
The fielding of overage players has been going on for sometime in many sports, but a recent case of impersonation reported by soccer players of Sanjay Public Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, has shaken the sports fans. The reason behind this alleged impersonation was to excel in the All India Subroto Mukherjee Football Cup for under-17 players in which one entry per school is allowed from each affiliated unit.

The Enforcement Staff of the Chandigarh Housing Board today bulldozed certain structures in Sector 40-C the owners of which had allegedly made alterations and violations of the building byelaws.
