Simultaneous poll in four states
Ludhiana, December 14
The Chief Election Commissioner, Mr J.M. Lyngdoh, today announced that there would be simultaneous elections in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttranchal and Mizoram. However, he declined to reveal when the notification for the same would be issued.

Security up at Wagah
Amritsar, December 14
A high-level meeting of intelligence agencies was held in Amritsar today to take cognizance of the security measures in the border district after the suicide attack on Parliament yesterday. Top intelligence officials were, however, tightlipped about the meeting.

BJP to launch poll drive with ‘rath yatra’
Chandigarh, December 14
The Punjab BJP Executive Committee today decided to take out a rath yatra as part of its election campaign, beginning December 30. This was announced by the BJP state president, Mr Brij Lal Rinwa, here today. Union Home Minister, L. K. Advani will flag off the yatra at Chandigarh and address the party’s first election rally at Rajpura, the constituency of Mr Balramji Das Tandon.

Mind your tongue, Amarinder told
Chandigarh, December 14
The Punjab Finance Minister, Capt Kanwaljit Singh, today lambasted the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President, Capt Amarinder Singh, and warned him that he should exercise restraint over issuing irresponsible and childish statements and refrain from indulging in mud-slinging.





In the wake of the attacks on Parliament, Punjab readies itself for countering any such attack.

Akali leaders blame Cong for Punjab ills

Senior Akali leaders — Union Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Bibi Jagir Kaur and Sukhbir Singh Badal yesterday blamed the Congress for past and present ills of the state. Akali leaders made it clear that the SAD would harp on “development and peace” and try to corner its rivals including the Panthic Morcha on these issues.

Pasla hits out at Surjeet

A revolt against the general secretary of the CPM, Mr Harkishen Singh Surjeet, was sparked off when the recently expelled party secretary, Mr Mangat Ram Pasla, held the former responsible for deviation from the party principles during a state-level parallel conference at the Partap Bagh grounds here today.

Ferozepore DCC office-bearers
Abohar, December 14
The long awaited list of office-bearers of the Ferozepore District Congress Committee was released by DCC president Sajjan Kumar Jakhar today with the approval of Capt Amarinder Singh, president PPCC. The DCC will have 15 vice-presidents, 18 general secretaries and 19 secretaries.

The controversy regarding the election for the post of president of the Municipal Council, Amloh, took a decisive turn when after inquiry the president of the council, Mr Baldev Sedha, was found guilty of submitting a false certificate of Backward Class showing him belonging to “Soni Rajput”, while he actually belongs to “Swarnkar/Saniar” caste, which is not a Backward Class.

Murders: people insecure, police clueless
Amritsar, December 14
Citizens here are plagued with a sense of insecurity and the police even after two months, has been clueless about the murders in the city. Junior Engineer, Devinder Singh Walia, the Punjab State Electricity Board was allegedly murdered by his colleague due to professional rivalry.

Pressure-horn users flout ban
Bathinda
Although the district administration here has banned the use of pressure horns, hooters and back horns in vehicles, as these produce decibel sounds, still these are being used increasingly in the city. The shopkeepers selling these horns and the owners of vehicles fitted with these banned horns, revealed that youths and drivers of heavy vehicles which ply on main roads buy such horns. Most of the youths use these for thrill.

Two lawyers booked, Bar observes strike
Mansa, December 14
The lawyers here went on strike in protest against the alleged false implication of two lawyers in a case registered in connection with the assault on Tehsildar Jatinder Singh Saggu and Naib-Tehsildar Jai Chand Parinda. It was decided to extend the strike till December 18 at a meeting of the Bar Association held here today. They also gave a call for the statewide strike of lawyers on December 18. The members of the Bar raised slogans against the Deputy Commissioner and both the revenue officers.

Twin bridge over Ghaggar inaugurated
Shambhu (Patiala), December 14
The high-level twin bridge over the Ghaggar on G.T. Road was inaugurated by Mr Ajaib Singh Mukhmailpur, Minister of the State for PWD, Punjab, here today. The minister also dedicated to the nation the four-laning of the National Highway-1 from Shambhu, on the Punjab-Haryana border, to Sirhind, completed at a cost of Rs 253 crore.

Parties condemn attack
Faridkot, December 14
Senior representatives of different political parties, including Mr Sukhwinder Singh Dhaliwal, President, United Communist Party of India, Punjab, Mr Avtar Singh Brar, local Congress MLA, and Mr Pawanpreet Singh, general secretary, district unit of the CPI, held Pakistan responsible for the suicide attack by militants on Parliament House yesterday.

Sukhbir Badal’s appeal to NRIs

Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal, former Union Minister and member of the Rajya Sabha yesterday called upon NRIs that each one of them should contribute at least Rs 1 lakh for the development of his native village, speaking at a function at village Lakhpur near here after inaugurating Rs 38 lakh bridge across Bein rivulet.

Sehgal sworn in as Lok Pal
Chandigarh, December 14
Justice Dharam Vir Sehgal (retd) was today sworn in as Lok Pal of Punjab. Lt Gen JFR Jacob, Governor of Punjab, administered him oath of office and allegiance to the constitution, at a simple function in Punjab Raj Bhavan. Earlier, the Chief Secretary, Mr N.K. Arora, sought the permission of the Governor to start the ceremony.

Justice Dharam Vir Sehgal (retd.) being sworn in as Lokpal by the Punjab Governor, Lieut-Gen JFR Jacob, PVSM (retd.), at Punjab Raj Bhavan on Friday.

432 constables promoted
Jalandhar, December 14
The district police has promoted 432 constables to the rank of Head Constable during a special parade held here today. The Parade was presided over by the Inspector-General of Police, Jalandhar Zone, Mr J.P. Birdi. According to the SSP, Mr Gaurav Yadav, the decision to promote the constables after the completion of 16 years of service was taken by the state government recently. He further said the objective of the state governments' order was to remove stagnation in the rank of constables.

1 killed, 2 hurt in shootout
Batala, December 14
Ms Surinder Kaur (50) and Gurmej Singh (23) were admitted to the local Civil Hospital with bullet injuries while Baljinder Singh of Harnam Nagar was killed in shootout here. A case has been registered under Sections 302, 307 and 34 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act.

Non-bailable warrants against Inspector
Patiala, December 14
A local court today issued non-bailable warrants against Inspector Kashmira Singh in a case involving the disappearance of Sant Chanan Singh and six of his relatives.

Substandard pesticides seized
Gurdaspur, December 14
Mr Gulzar Singh Sandhu, Chief Agriculture Officer, seized a large quantity of sub-standard pesticides being sold at Sarna after a raid yesterday. The officer accompanied by the staff of the Agriculture Department raided the premises of M/s J.K. Sharma Pesticides Store and S.K. Trading, Sarna, in this district yesterday and today.
