Dream theme

Dreaming of walls
Vinaya Katoch Manhas

Walls as obstacles are the creation of a man's mind.

ONE generally tends to associate walls with houses or buildings but in dreams it may not necessarily be so.

It could be empty four walls surrounding you, an obstacle you are trying to overcome, a symbol of someone overbearing or stifling or a symbol of protection and security. Thus, in different contexts walls assume the role of an important symbol in dreams.

In the Indian context should you see yourself climbing a high wall, it is a good omen and you stand to gain from such a dream. Situations suddenly become favourable. Should you see it as an obstacle that you are trying to cross but are unable to then beware of enemies and hardships along your path.

Should you see yourself fall from a high wall it predicts wrong actions on your part that shall bring about your downfall and soil your reputation.

As per western thought to dream of a wall obstructing your path predicts that you shall face ill-luck and lose in important matters. If you see yourself jump over a wall, you shall overcome obstacles and achieve your goals. Should you make a way through the wall then you shall succeed in attaining your wishes by strong will. Should you build a wall it means that your plans shall succeed. Should you see yourself walking on top of a wall it predicts that very soon your future shall become secure. To hide behind a wall predicts wrong actions on your part which you shall be ashamed of.

Psychologically speaking, a wall usually indicates boundaries that we tend to set for ourselves. These may be certain defense mechanisms that we adopt. These could be to protect ourselves from others or avoid unpleasant and unwanted thoughts and influences. It also symbolises a dividing line. A hole in the wall can suggest a breach of trust or a threat to your privacy. If the wall is imprisoning and a source of fear, then it means that we shall be trapped by our own fears and doubts. If the wall alternatively appears and disappears then it foretells partial solutions to our problems and difficulties.

Take the case of a 15-year-old boy. Since the past couple of months he had begun to dream of walls coming closer and he would feel threatened. He would wake up in fear of getting crushed. The dream portrays his fear and sense of oppression on account of his forthcoming class X board exams. The fact that his parents were putting undue pressure on him to get good results was the reason for the fear.
