Sacred Heart School auditorium stone laid

Ludhiana, December 17
The foundation stone of the new auditorium of the Sacred Heart Convent School at Sarabha Nagar was laid down today. The auditorium would be constructed with state of the art technology.

It has been a gigantic task for the management to organise funds for the auditorium. The management has been working hard to raise funds for the same. Recently a fete was organised for raising funds by students and staff.

This bonanza for the kids was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana. Mr S.K. Sandhu, who expressed his pleasure on the construction of the auditorium.

He assured Ms Halima, Principal of the school, of all monetary help for the construction of the auditorium. The lucky draw of Raffle’ was held in the evening. This was attended by a large number of people.

College teachers to hold relay fast

Ludhiana, December 17
The Joint Action Committee comprising teachers, principals, members of management and non-teaching employees of aided and unaided colleges of Punjab and Chandigarh have decided to hold a 10-day relay fast at Matka Chowk in Chandigarh from December 20 onwards to demand the implementation of their demands.

The members decided to continue fast till the restoration of 95 per cent grant-in-aid scheme. They blamed the Punjab Government for withholding the scheme for the past two years. They also demanded aid for unaided colleges of the state.

It was also decided that the colleges would be re-opened as soon as the 18 arrested teachers were released.

While the teachers revealed that there were chances that the teachers might be released tomorrow and the colleges be opened on Wednesday.

Course on cosmetic dentistry

The Indian Dental Association, Punjab state branch, organised a one-day hands-on course on “Cosmetic Dentistry, Now and Forever” here yesterday at Park Plaza.

Dr Kanir Bhatia, a renowned cosmetic surgeon from Mumbai delivered a talk on the topic and discussed latest trends, materials and up-to-date techniques of cosmetic surgery.

The man responsible for the beautiful smile of Miss Universe Lara Dutta, Dr Bhatia, while talking to mediapersons said that the concept of cosmetic dentistry was a new one as earlier there was just aesthetic dentistry. He said due to awareness now and to present a natural look, cosmetic dentistry had replaced the general dentistry.

Dr Bhatia said it was a quick solution for the problems of overlapping, discoloured and space in teeth. Dr Bhatia said people had misconceptions that the treatment of cosmetic dentistry was expensive.

Dr Vivek Saggar, a city-based dentist, also delivered a lecture on the topic with the help of slides and projectors.

Mr S.K. Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner, and the chief guest said there was need to spread awareness among the masses about dental problems. Children should be given education on proper brushing of teeth.

Sports festival begins

Samrala, December 17
The three-day annual sports festival of the Malwa Sports Association, Samrala, started here yesterday with the offering of Ardas.

The flag hoisting ceremony was performed by Mr Malkiat Singh Dhillon, president of the association, and Mr Gurmail Singh Sidhu, SP (D) Khanna, inaugurated it. Jathedar Kirpal Singh Khirnian, member SGPC, presided over the function.

Thirteen teams took part in the Kabaddi. The results of the events are: Weightlifting (62kg), group, Vickey Batta of Khanna (Ist), Inderjeet Singh Ludhiana 2nd, (70 kg), group, Nazar Singh Khanna (Ist), Kamaljeet Singh, BSF, 2nd. Thirty five bullockcarts took part in the races. The results of the eleven heats winners are-Chamkaur Singh Dakha, Nazar singh Gagra, Nirmal Singh Dhanno, Bela Singh Dehlon, Gurdeep Singh Dhour Khurd, Nazar Singh Gagra, Shingara Singh Sarwarpur, Gurdeep Singh Gujarwal, Jaswant Singh Chehalan, Nirmal Singh Gujarwal, Malkiat and Singh Jodhan.

The events of December 15 that could not take place due to rain would now, be held on December 18 as per published programme earlier, according to Mr Behari Lal Saddi, press secretary of the association.
