Karnataka MLAs visit PAU

Ludhiana, December 18
A delegation of MLAs from Karnataka which visited the Punjab Agricultural University praised coordination and cooperation between the university and the state government departments, including Agriculture, Horticulture and Soil Conservation.

They also said that the complete integration between research, teaching and extension in the PAU could serve as a model for the other states. Dr K.S. Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, told the visiting MLAs that more than 90 per cent area in Punjab was under irrigation of which 60 per cent was irrigated with tubewells.

Dr Aulakh said that conducive agricultural policies of the state government had helped in bringing green revolution in the state. He said that the future thrust would be on evolving the technologies which minimised the cost of production and improve the quality of farm produce, sustainability of natural resources will also be kept in view.

Russian delegates visit varsity

Ludhiana, December 18
A delegation of the Russian Academy of Agriculture Sciences visited the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) and held discussions with Dr Kirpal Singh Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor of PAU, and other senior officers of the university.

The delegation appreciated the research work done in the university, particularly for evolving high-yielding varieties and other low cost technologies. They also appreciated the extension education set-up of the PAU and the close rapport of the scientists with the farmers.

The delegation members also visited the Museum of Plant Breeding, Department of Farm Power and Machinery, Farmers Service Centre, university orchards and the Museum of Social History of rural life of Punjab.

Rishabh, Avitosh top in maths test

Ludhiana, December 18
Rishabh Singla and Avitosh Pal Singh, students of DAV Public School, have won the first prize in the fourth state-level mathematics test conducted by Castle Education Centre at Guru Nanak Public School.

Declaring the results today, Ms Rima Juneja, vice-president of the centre, said 900 students from over 27 schools had participated in the test. Rishabh and Avitosh scored 84.75 per cent. Bhuvesh Aggawal from Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar, was declared Genius 2001 as he scored 81.75 per cent while Dinesh Maheshwary from the same school won the Ace 2001 prize for his score of 81.25 per cent.

The other 12 mathematics experts from Ludhiana district included Rahul Kumar Garg, Inderdeep Singh, Kechit Goyal, Ripudaman and Sapan Vig from DAV Public School, Abhishek Bansal from Tagore Public School, Aditi Gupta from Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, Lokesh Gupta from Kundan Vidya Mandir, Anirudh Mirakhur and Rahul Jain from Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar, Ashish Gupta from Shamrock Christian School and Vikas Jain from BCM Senior Secondary School.

Three toppers from schools affiliated to the Punjab School Education Board included Kanwaljeet Singh from Blossom English High School, Ajay Pal Singh from Baba Isher Singh Public School and Manoj Kumar from Joesph’s School.

Arrested teachers released

Ludhiana, December 18
With the release of 18 arrested teachers and withdrawal of ‘‘ceasework’’ call by the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union (PCCTU), teachers, principals and students from various aided and unaided colleges heaved a sigh of relief.

While no official announcement has been made regarding the opening of colleges, it is believed that classes will resume from December 20.

The city colleges have been lying closed for the past one month.

However, they had also announced that protest against the non-implementation of their demands, including enhancement of grant-in-aid and extending grant to unaided colleges, would continue in the form of relay fast at Chandigarh from December 20 to 31.

Meanwhile, hundreds of college teachers, principals and members of management took part in a protest rally at Chandigarh today. The rally was addressed by union executives who were released today.
