Workshop on adolescent healthcare

Panchkula, December 19
An orientation workshop on Adolescent Health Care was organised by the Panchkula branch of the Family Planning Association of India, here today.

As many as 66 persons, including government officials, volunteers, staff and students of Government College. Panchkula and Government College, Kalka, participated in the workshop.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Pushpa Khanna, president of the branch, informed that they would be covering 10 schools ( five each in rural and urban areas), two colleges and 10,000 youth under this project.

“Networking with NGOs will be done for its implementation, ” she said. She also informed that this project on establishment of Adolescent Health Care Clinic by Government of India and was funded by the World Health Organisation, South East Asia Region.

Dr Supriya, maternal health consultant, State Institute of Health and Family Welfare delivered an interactive lecture on health care in adolescents and spoke on unwanted pregnancies, AIDS, STDs and population stabilisation. Dr Sangeeta D. Pandit, Medical Officer of Family Planning Association of India, too addressed the gathering. Later a panel discussion was also held between the participants and experts.

Oil samples taken by Health Dept

Chandigarh, December 19
Officials of the UT Health Department yesterday picked up samples of eight brands of mustard and edible oil being produced by two oil mills.

According to official information here, the samples have been sent for laboratory test. The oil is being manufactured by two city mills, Shiv Oil Mills and Saraswati Oil Mills of Industrial Area, Phase I and II.

The inspection was carried out on a directive from Mr Rameshwar Chand, Director, Health Services and Food Health Authority, UT. According to Mr Rameshwar Chand, there have been reports of adulteration in the edible oil and the Health Department would do its best to ensure that the consumers are not cheated.

The team consisted of Senior Food Inspector, Mr M.K. Sharma, and was led by Mr G. Dewan, Local Health Authority.

DAVC-10 win kho-kho title

Chandigarh, December 19
DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, clinched the men section kho-kho title in the Panjab University Inter-college meet concluded here today on the university campus grounds here. SD College, Hoshiarpur, was second while BAM Khalsa College, Garhshankar, and MR Government College, Fazilka, got third and fourth place, respectively.

In the PU inter-college zonal handball meet played here today, PU campus, Chandigarh, defeated JC DAV College, Dasuya, while GGD SD College, Chandigarh, outplayed GN College, Killianwali (Punjab), at 43-30.

Kabaddi meet

Coaching Centre, Sector 42, bagged the junior boys title in the Chandigarh State Kabaddi Championship for senior, junior and sub-junior boys and girls section played here today. The second position went to Government Senior Secondary School, Dhanas. Earlier, the state meet was inaugurated by Mr Kuldip Singh, newly elected councilor, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh.

Results: boys — Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, b Government High School, Sector 40, 43-41; Government High School, Kajheri, b SPS Club, Sector 38 (West), 23-15; Kabaddi CC-42 b GHS, Kajheri, 58-17; and Kabaddi CC-42 b GSSS, Dhanas 36-26.

Junior girls — GSSS, Dhanas, b Sector 40 Club, 46-20; GHS, Sector 40-A, b Sector 40 Club 26-13; GHS, Sector 40, b GSSS, Dhanas, 55-37.

Selection trials

The Chandigarh Amateur Body Building Association will hold the selection trials for the junior Mr India Body Building Championship going to be held from January 4 to 6 at Jaipur. These trials would be held on December 28 at SCO 62-63, Sector 17-A, behind Anand Theatre, Chandigarh, from 4 pm to 5 pm, to represent Chandigarh team in the junior national meet. The competitors must bring with them their original birth certificates. Meanwhile, the 8th sub-junior Mr Chandigarh and 11th ‘junior Mr’ Chandigarh Body Building Meet has been postponed from January 6 to January 12, 2002, at DAV College Auditorium, Sector 10.

Guidelines to guest houses, cinemas

The police has asked the owners of the guest houses, cinema hall-owners and market associations here to remain vigilant and report any suspicious person(s) and objects to it.

The police also plans to hold slide shows in cinema halls apart from public meetings to educate residents to remain vigilant. The police authorities will hold meetings with the guest house-owners, cinema hall owners and market associations to sensitise them about any suspicious persons or objects.

At a meeting today, which was attended by senior police officials, including the SSP, Mr Parag Jain, the SP (city), Mr Baldev Singh, DSPs and all SHOs, security arrangements in the city were reviewed. Sources informed that a tight check on traffic movement maintained and security of vital installations will be further beefed up. The VIP security arrangements were also reviewed at the meeting.

Meanwhile, Mr S.S. Randhawa, DSP (Central), today asked all guest house-owners, cinema hall-owners and members of market associations, falling in the central police division, and asked them to check briefcases and bags of visitors. The guest house-owners were asked to give rooms to people only after establishing their identity.
