Course for young farmers

The Directorate of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), will organise a three-month training course in scientific agriculture for young farmers of the state.

Giving this information, Dr J.S. Kolar, Director, Extension Education, said the free course would be conducted in Kairon Kisan Ghar of the PAU from January 7 to April 5, 2002. For young farmers of Gurdaspur and Amritsar districts similar course would be organised at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Gurdaspur.

Dr Kolar said young farmers desirous of adopting farming as a profession would be provided with theoretical and practical training in crop production, fruit production, vegetable production, livestock, bee keeping, mushroom cultivation and other allied enterprises.

Matriculate farmers aged between 20 and 40 years could send their applications on plain paper to the Professor and Head, Department of Extension Education, PAU, latest by January 2, 2002, while young farmers of Amritsar and Gurdaspur districts could send their applications to the Associate Director, (Training), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Gurdaspur.

The interview, except for the farmers of Amritsar and Gurdaspur, would be conducted on January 3, 2002, at 10.30 a.m. in Kairon Kisan Ghar, PAU. Those not able to send applications could report for the interview directly. The selected candidates would have to deposit Rs 500 as security on the spot. The accommodation in Kisan Ghar would be provided at nominal rates.

Tributes paid to Shradhanand

Martyrdom Day of Swami Shradhanand was observed at SKN Model High School, Tilak Nagar, here today.

Pandit Surinder Kumar Shastri from Arya Samaj Mandir recited vedic hymns and performed havan. He apprised students of the purpose of reciting gayatri mantra and told them about the life of Swami Shradhanand.

Kids from Nursery and Class I gave speeches and presented songs based on the achievements of Swamiji. Ms Dulari Kaura, Headmistress, highlighted the spirit of the Swami to win freedom for the country. On the same day, the students also recited hymns to observe Martyrdom Day of Guru Teg Bahadur.

Meanwhile, a function was held at Nav Gyan Jyoti Public High School, Gopal Nagar by Arya Samaj, Dal Bazar, in connection with the martyrdom of Swami Shradhanand. It was presided over by Swami Shobhanand. Mr Roshan Lal Arya, general secretary, Arya Pratinidhi Sabha, Punjab, who was the chief guest at the function, said the country was facing with terrorism, casteism, corruption, religious bigotry and a lack of ethics in politics. He said in order to get rid of all these evils, we must adopt the path shown by Swami Shadhanand.

The 46th annual conference of the Indian Orthopaedic Association will be held at Ahmedabad from December 17 to 23.

According to a press release, over 2500 orthopaedic surgeons from all over India and abroad will attend it.

Inter-district police meeting held

Ahmedgarh, December 19
An inter-district meeting of police officials was held under the chairmanship of Mr Gurpreet Singh, SP (Detective), Sangrur, and Mr G.S. Sidhu, SP (Detective), Khanna, at Canal Rest House, Jagira, near here, yesterday. The meeting was organised to exchange information about criminals operating in different police districts, and to discuss the measures to curb the incidents of crime.

Terming the meeting as successful, Mr Toor said police personnel from Sangrur, Jagraon, Khanna and Barnala districts exchanged important information about the anti-social elements of their areas, who could not be arrested due to lack of evidence. Besides, they discussed their problems and prepared new strategies to nab the wanted criminals. Mr Sidhu also briefed the participants about the ultra-modern techniques of crime detection.

Prominent among others who attended the meeting were Mr Kulchhinder Singh, DSP, Malerkotla; Mr Paramjit Singh Goraya, DSP, Dakha; Mr Amrik Singh, DSP, Raikot; Mr Balbir Singh, DSP, Dhuri; Mr Gurmit Singh, DSP, Barnala.
