PGI to demand Rs 300 cr

Chandigarh, December 20
In a case passed and forwarded by the PGI Standing Finance Committee, the PGI will be demanding a sum close to Rs 300 crore for its 10th five year plan from the Central Government. The detailed demand listing the individual demands made by the various departments of the PGI forms the part of agenda of the meeting of the PGI Standing Finance Committee scheduled to be held tomorrow at New Delhi.

According to sources, the agenda also includes discussion on one of the long standing demands of the PGI employees regarding a backlog promotion scheme. “We are expecting that some positive decision regarding this long pending and genuine demand of ours will be taken,” informed a PGI employees leader.

The committee will also consider the annual audit report of PGI accounts prepared by the Comptroller and Auditor General’s office. The sources state that more than one report of the kind will be taken up for discussion.

The committee is also likely to discuss the various budget proposals and the revised estimates of the current financial year.

Harinder to play in international squash meets

Harinder Pal Sandhu, a student of Yadavindra Public School, SAS Nagar has been selected for two major international squash meets during the next couple of days. The first Scottish Junior open squash meet at Edinburgh (Scotland) is from December 27 to 30 and the British Junior Open at Sheffield from January 2. This was disclosed by Amitoj Inder Singh, his squash coach.

He said the British Open was the unofficial world championship and the highest-rated squash tournament in the world.

Harinder performed well in the Australian Junior in September last, having remained runner-up in the boys below 13 age group. He also won the Maharashtra open and the Western India open squash meet at Mumbai in November for under-13 section and was adjudged the most promising junior player.

Kabaddi championship

The Chandigarh Police in men’s section and the Government College for Girls, Sector 11 in women’s section emerged winners in the Chandigarh State kabaddi championships which concluded here on Thursday. Mr Baldev Singh, SP, UT, gave away the prizes. In the final, the Chandigarh Police humbled Kabaddi coaching centre, Sector 42, 55-18 while GCG-11 outplayed the Sector 40 club 32-18.

Handball tournament

SGGS College, Sector 26, Chandigarh and PU campus won two of its league matches played on Thursday in the Panjab University Inter-college zonal handball men tournament at PU campus grounds. Results: SGGS college, Chandigarh b Government College, Ludhiana 28-25 (half time 12-11). PU Campus, Chandigarh b GGD SD College, Chandigarh 36-21 (14-16); SGGSC, Chandigarh b GGD SD College, Sector 32 Chandigarh 46-36 (21-13) PU Campus, Chandigarh b Government College, Ludhiana 27-26 (15-14).

Carrom meet

Taranpreet Pahwa of Shishu Niketan Senior Secondary school Sector 22 will lead the Chandigarh carrom team for the 29th National Sub-Junior and Inter-state carrom meet to be held at Bhopal from December 25 to 29. The other members of the team are, Ravinder (Mount Carmel-47), Harmanpreet (St Stephen’s-45), Piyush Sood (St Kabir-45), Amanpreet and Sukhpal (St Stephen’s-45). Mahesh Sekhri and KS Patwal will accompany the team as officials. Mr Sekhri has also been nominated as the technical director for the ninth Federation Cup Carrom Tournament to be held at Bhopal along with the above meet.
