700 blood donors get awards

As many as 700 blood donors of the city were awarded at a special ceremony organised by the Blood Bank Society Chandigarh at Panjab University here today.

Lt-Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd), Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT, was the chief guest on the occasion.

While speaking at the function, Gen Jacob said the Blood Bank Society was a tribute to thousands of voluntary blood donors who had helped Chandigarh in attaining the unique distinction of 100 per cent voluntary blood donation. With the emergence of Chandigarh as a major centre of advanced medical care in the north-west, the society was now establishing a blood centre to augment the supply of safe blood in the area in association with the Rotary Club of Chandigarh. He said the administration was committed to providing better health care facilities to its citizens.

Mrs S. Bambah, vice-president of the society, said the annual function, besides providing an opportunity to honour the donors, helped in motivating the invitees to carry the movement further.

An announcement was made by Dr B.N.S. Walia, president of the society, that a new Blood Resource Centre, which is under construction with the help from Fortis authorities and will function in partnership with the Rotary Club Chandigarh from next year.

DAV gymnasts are PU champs

Chandigarh, December 22
The Sector 10 DAV College of Chandigarh won the Panjab University Gymnastics Championship for men by securing 159.10 points. Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Chandigarh won the second place, while the Panjab University campus was at the third place.

In the individual section, Laxman Gurang was declared the all-round best gymnast with 35.40 points, while Chetan Singh of the SGGS College got the second place and Deepak Uniyal (34.10 points) was fourth.

The winners in various events were as follows: Floor — Laxman Gurang; pommel horse — Chetan Singh; rings — Deepak Uniyal, vault — Jasdeep Singh; parallel bars — Laxman Gurang; horizontal bars — Chetan Singh.

School cricket

The Sector 8 DAV Senior Secondary School won the UT Inter-school Cricket Tournament for the Shivalik Trophy organised by the UT Cricket Association. In the final played in the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium here today, they defeated the Sector 44 Sanjay Public School by eight wickets. Col Ajit Singh, the UT Cricket Association chief, gave away the prizes.

Brief scores: SPS-44 — 160 runs for 8 wickets (Vikram Verma 33, Harneet Singh 33, Harpreet Singh 28, S. Mehta 28 n.o., VRV Singh 4 for 32); DAVSSS-8 — 161 runs for 2 wickets in 31.2 overs (Vishwas Bhalla 64, Akashdeep 51).

Sports meet

The annual sports meet of the Sector 27 Moti Ram Arya Senior Secondary School and the JB Modern Public School was held today on the school premises. Mr Karan A. Singh, the UT Finance and Sports Secretary, was the chief guest.

Students held a march past under various banners. They presented aerobics, karate, yoga, drill and bhangra shows. Later, Mr Karan A. Singh gave the winners mementoes and medals.

The annual sports day of Strawberry Fields was held today for about 700 spectators. The chief guest of the occasion was Ms Neeru Nanda, Advisor to the UT Administrator. She said such events involved parents in the growth and learning of their children.

The programme began with traditional march past, followed by an animation show where tiny tots dressed as cartoon characters. Musical numbers and a flag drill were also presented, besides a yoga demonstration.
