Tripti Nath

THE four-day exhibition of Indian system of medicine which concluded at Pragati Maidan here on Tuesday, drew an overwhelming response.

The exhibition, the first of its kind in Delhi, was organised by the Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy (ISM&H), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and India Trade Promotion Organisation.

The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr C.P. Thakur, inaugurated the exhibition which featured drugs and equipment of various systems of medicine besides medicinal plants.

According to the Director, Department of ISM&H, Mr O.S. Veerwal, about 20,000 persons visited the exhibition every day. These included visitors from Austria, Japan, Korea, Russia and the UAE. Entry to the exhibition was free. Although the expenditure on the exhibition touched Rs 50 lakh, sources in the department are optimistic that the conference will become an annual event.

“The turnout shows that people have faith in the traditional system of medicine. They want to avail themselves of these facilities but do not know where to go.”

About 1500 visitors are reported to have visited speciality clinics, to get free consultation and medicines for arthritis, liver disorders, asthma besides skin and mental disorders from specialists of Ayurveda, Unani and homeopathy.

These clinics were open from 11 am to 2 pm and 3 pm to 6 pm every day. WHO REPORT-2001
The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr C.P. Thakur, has asserted India’s readiness to implement the 10 main recommendations of the World Health Organisation report-2001. Dr Thakur made this statement at the inauguration of the three-day regional conference of parliamentarians, on HIV/AIDS and mental health early this week.

The recommendations include provision of treatment in primary care within the community, availability of psychotropic drugs, development of trained manpower, inter-sectoral linkages and meaningful research and education through shared community initiatives.

He said that India is the first country to recognise the need to integrate mental health services with general healthcare at the primary level.

About 50 parliamentarians from nine-member countries of WHO’s South-East Asia region are attending the conference, organised by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and supported by WHO. The WHO South East Asia regional office has been organising regional conferences of parliamentarians since 1996, in a bid to foster partnership with the people’s representatives and improve the health of the people, particularly the poor, the vulnerable and the marginalised.

PUBERTY CLINIC
The Growth and Puberty Clinic opened in the Paediatric Ward of Ganga Ram Hospital in September, has attracted a lot of interest.

According to Paediatric Endocrinologist, Dr Archana Arya, the clinic caters to children who have problems related to growth and pubertal development. Dr Arya who examines newborns and patients till the age of 19 said that lot of persons come too late by when they have gone through their pubertal spurt.

At that time, intervention is not possible. “We see if the child is genetically short. This enables us to make a rough prediction about the height. We also evaluate the child for thyroid problem or any chronic illness (which slows down the growth). If these two are fine, we evaluate the growth hormones and Turner syndrome in girls (a genetic disorders, where girls do not grow properly and have delayed puberty). Deficiencies of growth hormone or Turner syndrome are treated with growth hormone injectible preparation.”

Dr Arya said that apart from measuring height and weight, they take an X-ray of the left wrist and hand to determine the age. The growth and puberty go hand in hand with the bone-edge, which is visible on the X-ray of the left wrist.

It helps in determining the growth pattern of the child. If the bone edge does not match with the chronological age, intervention is possible. On the other hand, if the bone has fused, intervention is not possible.”

Dr Arya said that those under medication, are called for review to find out whether the child has outgrown his clothes and shoes. “Early puberty and delayed puberty are conditions that can be treated. If we find that the child cannot grow further, we try to talk to the parents.”

Interestingly, some patients have actually gone to doctors who claim that height can be increased till the age of 35. “Some of them develop gastro-intestinal problems and side effects.”

ROLE OF PHARMACIST
The 53rd Indian Pharmaceutical Congress (IPC) was held at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute on December 21.

The contour of the seminar was – of getting marginalised in the overall health delivery system of the country. Professor S.K. Kulkarni, internationally renowned pharmaceutical scientist and head of University College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, presiding over the conference said that “while the draft, the National Health Policy has taken note of the low investment in health, rural-urban disparity in health facilities and reluctance of doctors to serve in rural areas, it has not addressed the role of pharmacist in community healthcare.

“The potential of the pharmacist in community heath and in national health campaigns like HIV-AIDS, women health, polio eradication, population control and child health has been recognised all over the world.

Even the World Health Organisation has said that the role of clinical pharmacist is very crucial in providing low budget health services in the community,” Prof. Kulkarni said.

The organisers have decided to draw curtains on the year of Women Empowerment with a special symposium on the role of women pharmacist in community health. Apart from interactive sessions on stress management, aromatherapy and healthy lifestyle, the symposium will provide student pharmacists a chance to interact with the stalwarts of the pharmaceutical industry. Over 2,500 pharmacy professionals from various parts of the country and 30 delegates from Germany, South East Asia, the UK and the USA are expected to attend the three-day congress. A state-of-art pharmaceutical expo is also being organised by FICCI at the Congress venue.

Arjun Atwal, Randhawa lead challenge in Grand Prix Golf
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, December 22
Arjun Atwal and Jyoti Randhawa, two of India’s best golfers, will square up for what could be their first and only clash in the domestic circuit when they line up for the inaugural Royal Challenge Grand Prix beginning at the Noida Golf Club from December 26.

Four out of the top eight professionals in the country are expected to participate in the Grand Prix event. Though Atwal and Randhawa may again be clashing in the Royal Challenge Indian Open and the Hero Honda Masters, the two Asian PGA events to be played in India, the Grand Prix duel could well be their only clash on the domestic tour, and that should provide added flavour.

“I really look forward to playing with Jyoti. He is a brilliant player and it is always a challenge playing with him. He brings out the best in me as well others”, said Atwal of his upcoming clash with Randhawa.

Atwal and Randhawa are the only two Indians to have won both the Indian Open and the Hero Honda Masters. Between them, they have three Hero Honda Masters and two Indian Open titles. In their last clash at the 2001 Wills Indian Open, Atwal was fifth, while Randhawa was tied for the 15th place. And for the first time after four years, the title went out of India.

Between October 1998 and October 2000, the pair monopolised the two Asian events in India as Randhawa won three of the five and Atwal picked up the other two. Atwal has just returned to India after a very successful season on the Asian PGA, besides qualifying for the 2002 European PGA, and making a mark in the Buy.com tour in the United States.

“It has been a long and tiring season, but I look forward to the Grand Prix event, which will be my first event on the Indian PGA tour,” added Atwal.

“I am extremely delighted that leading players like Arjun Atwal and Jyoti Randhawa are leading the event. Our commitment to golf is getting the required support from Indian golf professionals”, said Mr Amar Sinha, director of Shaw Wallace.

Both Atwal and Randhawa are long hitters and aggressive players who are not afraid of going for their shots. And with the 6,940-yard long NOIDA Golf Club course having provided some very low scores in the last tournament held there, this event could well see some exciting golf.

In the last event played at Noida, Vivek Bhandari and Mukesh Kumar took part the course. Bhandari set a new course record with seven-under 65 on the first day, but Mukesh bettered that by going eight-under on the third day.

In the end, Bhandari had the last word, by winning the tournament by one stroke after an exciting battle.

Randhawa, second on the APGA 2000 Order of Merit, has had an up and down season this year. But the high point was that he went past the first stage of the US qualifiers.

Gaurav Ghei, eager to make up for a low-key season, and Amandeep Johl, both regulars on the Asian PGA Tour, as well as the three big stars of the domestic scene - Mukesh Kumar, Vijay Kumar and Shiv Prakash - have confirmed their participation.

The second event of the Grand Prix series will be held in the Bombay Presidency Golf Course from January 15 to 19, and the third leg in Kolkata in February.
