Saroya, Leena lift gold medals in PNB meet

New Delhi, December 23
J P Saroya clocked 2:11:4 seconds to win the men’s 800 metres gold in the 19th All-India Punjab National Bank Inter-Zone Sports Meet at the Karnail Singh stadium in Delhi on Sunday.

The Chairman and Managing Director of Punjab National Bank S S Kohli inaugurated the meet. Twelve contingents took part in an impressive march past. Others present on the occasion were Deputy General Manager CKD Gowda and P M Madan of Delhi Zone. Narender Singh, who clocked 2:17.7 secs, lifted the silver medal while Tahal Singh (2:17.2) ran away with the bronze.

Leena Fertado clocked 33.1 secs to annex the women’s 200 metres gold. Premlata, who posted a time of 33.7 secs, claimed the silver while Kusumlata collected the bronze with a time of 34.6 secs.

Bihar Zone got the better of South Zone in straight sets at 25-10,25-11,25-8 in volleyball, while Rajasthan Zone defeated Bihar Zone by one point at 6-5 in kho-kho.

Central UP Zone defeated Rajasthan Zone by 3-0 in carrom. The UP team was composed of D K Manchanda, A K Saxena and J K Ratra. In another duel, Central Zone defeated East UP Zone 3-1. R S Batham and A S Verma were the members of the UP Zone team.

40 probables for DSA selection trials

New Delhi, December 23
Forty probables have registered themselves for the trials-cum-coaching camp to select the Delhi State Sub-Junior (Under-16) team for the Sub-Junior National Football Championship to be in Shillong. The trials will begin on Monday at 10 am at the Ambedkar Stadium.

Meanwhile, former Delhi Soccer Association (DSA) champions and crowd pullers from walled city, City Club, will take on Delhi Police in a division match in the DSA-SAIL Senior Division Soccer Championship at 1.30 pm on Monday at the Ambedkar Stadium.

Tarun Sangha meet Garhwal Heroes in a Group B match at 3 pm. The preliminary round matches will be held at the Ambedkar Stadium as well as the two practice grounds of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Eighteen teams, divided into two groups, are participating in the tournament.

Six teams from each of the two groups will qualify for the Super League to be played after the completion of the Durand Cup in February. Two bottom teams of each group will be relegated to the ‘A’ Division. Steel Authority of India Ltd. is sponsoring the local league for the sixth consecutive year. The Cosco will supply the official balls for the tournament. The probables has been asked to assemble in the Ambedkar Stadium in the stipulated time.

Top teams for Friends Club cricket

New Delhi, December 23
Defending champions and hosts Friends Club, runners-up Bright Club, Bhiwani, along with ten other teams from the National Capital Region will participate in the Friends Club Cricket Tournament to be held at the Royal Stadium, near Govt. Senior Secondary School, Dharuhera (Rewari) from December 26.

K N Colts will take on Golden Hawks in the opening match, while Youngsters will clash against the winners of the K N Colts-Golden Hawks match on December 27.

The semi-finals will be played on January 3 and 4, and the final on January 5. Former Ranji Trophy player and vice-president of DDCA Anil Jain will distribute the prizes.

Mishra Sports will sponsor the man of the match awards while Rajdhani Sports will sponsor the best batsman, best bowler and the man of the tournament awards.

Friends Club president Jitender Yadav said the title winners will be given a cash award of Rs 21,000 while the runners-up will be given Rs 11,000.

The participating teams are: Friends Club, Bright Club, Sonnet, K N Colts, Golden Hawks, Inborn Cricketers, Trans Yamuna Cricket Association (TYCA), Youngsters, Delhi Vidyut Board, Indian Air Force, Indira Gandhi Stadium Coaching Centre, Rajdhani Sports and Friends Club ‘B’ Dharuhera.

L-G reviews work on water plant

Lieutenant Governor Vijai Kapoor on Sunday held a high level meeting to review the progress of the construction of 270 cusecs raw water conveyance main from Murad Nagar in Uttar Pradesh for Sonia Vihar Water Treatment Plant.

Senior officers of Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam, Delhi Jal Board (DJB), National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC), Delhi Government and Delhi Development Authority (DDA) participated in the meeting.
