Sabeeha adjudged best at shooting tourney

Chandigarh, December 24
Sabeeha Dhillon shot 391/400 in the 10 m air rifle event and was adjudged the individual overall best air rifle shooter at the inaugural Panjab University Inter-College Air Weapons Shooting Championships at the Patiali Ki Rao shooting ranges, Sector 25, here today.

Anu Prashar was declared individual all-round best in the 10 m air pistol event when she shot 365/400. Dashmesh Girls College, Badal (Muktsar), clinched the team championship title in both air rifle and air pistol events while MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, was declared second and MTSM Memorial College for Women, Ludhiana, was third.

Under-16 cricket

Mohali Cricket Association XI defeated New Public school, Sector 18, by eight wickets in the second Satluj Cricket Tournament for under-16 played today at the Satluj Public School grounds. Brief scores: NPS-18—104 all out (Tarbinder Singh 25, Ankit 20, Parminder Singh 5 for 6); MCA—106 for 2 in 11 overs (Mandeep Singh 40, Baldeep Singh 40).

Cricket meet

Edmund Rice-26 and St John’s School, Sector 26, emerged winners in their respective matches in the second St John’s Challenger Cricket Trophy at St John’s school grounds. Brief scores: first match: ER-120 for 7 in 25 overs (Arjun Sharma 38, Gurasees Singh 17); St Kabir-26: 70 all out in 19 overs (Varun 11, Vidant 11); second match: YPS: 45 all out in 12.4 overs (Taranvir 11, Akshit Banerjee 3 for 8, Himanshu Bawa 3 for 10); St John’s: 47 for no loss in 6.2 overs (Devjyot Singh 20 n.o., Vikram Talwar 13 n.o.).

Cricket tourney

Satluj Public School, Sector 4, Panchkula, outplayed St Xavier’s Public School, Panchkula, by 115 runs in the inaugural tie of the 2nd Satluj League Cricket Tournament in under-16 section played here yesterday.

City team for Taekwon-do meet

The following members of the Chandigarh team will participate in the 16th National Taekwon-do (ITF) Championship to be held at Vijaywada from December 27 to 29, 2001. The team would be led under the supervision of Mr Gurdeep Singh Dhillon, president, Taekwon-do Association of Chandigarh: manager—Laxman Singh; captain—Rajesh Kumar; players—Jaswinder Singh, Krishan singh, Sunil Channa, Kulbir singh, Ajay Kumar, Bablu Dharamvir, Priyaranjan, Vikas, Ravi Kapoor, Amit Mittal, Manu Singh Bindra, Lovkesh and Amarjit Singh.

MC incurs 3.50 lakh on stone laying

The civic body is seriously contemplating deputing its own staff to handle the newly acquired truck-mounted sewer cleaning machine. As per the existing practice the machine is to be handed over to the Public Health department for maintenance.

The machine has been recently acquired by the civic body at a cost of Rs 16 lakh. Mr Kulwant Singh, president of the civic body, said in the past it had been observed that the sewer machine kept lying idle as the staff of the Public Health remained interested in using it.

Sources in the civic body said a machine purchased last year had gone out of order and had not been repaired. There were reports of the machine being put to use for jobs outside the limits of the civic body.

SAS Nagar, December 24
The SAS Nagar Municipal Council has been burdened with an expenditure of Rs 3.50 lakh incurred in making arrangements for the foundation stone laying ceremony of the state headquarters complex of the Local Government Department in Sector 62 here on December 6.

An agenda item for approval of the expenditure is being put forward for approval at the general house meeting of the civic body scheduled for December 26. According to information available, the civic body had been entrusted with the job of arranging “shamianas” at the venue of the function at Silvy Garden in Phase X, where a lunch was hosted for Union Minister Ananth Kumar, Punjab Local Government Minister Balramji Dass Tandon and other guests. Two toilets blocks were also purchased at a cost of Rs 16,000.

An item for arranging for a board with the name of former and present municipal councillors inscribed on it in brass metal was also placed for approval. An expenditure of Rs 35,000 is expected to be incurred on it. The meeting will take up works for repair of sewer lines at a cost of Rs 8 lakh in different parts of the town.

The council also proposes to take a retired SDO( Electrical), Mr Charandev Singh, on contract. The SDO retired from the civic body in November last. An agenda item of boring two new tubewells in the Industrial Area, Phase 1 and Phase IX at a cost of Rs 30 lakh would also be placed before the general house for approval.

An official of the civic body said the issue of reducing the rent from Rs 4.50 lakh to Rs 60,000 charged from a private company undertaking construction of a bus queue shelter at the PCL roundabout, Industrial Area, Phase 8 would also be discussed.

UT grants land for mandir

Chandigarh, December 24
The UT Administration has allotted 1,000 square yards to the Welfare Council Society, Sector 44, for construction of Radha Krishna Mandir, a press note of the society said here today.

The land has been allotted on a lease of 99 years at the rate of Rs 5,800 per square yard. The possession of the land will be given to the society in case 25 per cent of the cost is paid by January 4, 2002.

The administration says that the lease of the site will be cancelled if it is used for any purpose other than mentioned above.
