Delhi lift badminton title in PNB Meet

New Delhi, December 26
Delhi Zone claimed the women’s badminton team event beating Western Zone in the 19th All-India PNB Inter-Zone Sports Meet at the Karnail Singh Stadium in the Capital on Wednesday.

Neeru Chauhan of Delhi Zone won the women’s singles title beating C K Lahori of Western Zone. Vaidehi Patel of Western Zone came third. In cricket, Northern Zone sneaked past Western Zone by five runs, despite a fine all-round performance by Sunil Parab (4 for 14 and 45) for Western Zone.

Scores: Northern Zone: 155/7 (Praveen Madan 34, S K Sukhija 34, Sunil Parab 4/14). Western Zone: 150/8 (Sunil Parab 45, Bhat 23, Praveen Madan 3/29).

In another match, Punjab Zone entered the semi-final defeating East UP Zone by four wickets.

Scores: East UP Zone: 161/8 in 25 overs. Punjab Zone: 165 for 6 in 24.5 overs. Rajeev Khanduja’s four towering sixes were the highlight of the match. Rajasthan Zone defeated West UP Zone 36-16 after leading by 17-9 at half time, in basketball. In football, Western Zone drubbed Rajasthan Zone 5-1. Prabhakar Sethi scored three goals, and Pannalal Vaghela and Suresh Kohle netted one goal each. Eastern Zone and Punjab Zone emerged victorious in volleyball. Eastern beat East UP Zone 30-28,25-23,25-27,11-25, 15-12 while Punjab defeated West UP Zone 25-9,25-13,25-15.Western Zone entered the carrom final, defeating Delhi Zone 3-0. North Zone athletes, particularly those from Punjab, ran away with most of the medals in athletic events. Ravneet Singh of Punjab won the men’s 200m gold, when he came first with a time of 25.2 secs.

Pramod of Northern Zone finished second while Praveen, also of the same zone, ended up third. Sohan Singh of Punjab Zone lifted the hammer throw gold, with a heave of 33.77 metres. He was followed by O P Redu of Northern Zone and Rajbir Singh of West UP Zone. Praveen Kumar of Northern Zone cleared a distance of 5.34 metres to annex the long jump title with R S Gosain of West UP and J P Sharma of Punjab accounting for the silver and bronze medals.

In women’s long jump, Kusum Lata of West UP Zone won the gold with an effort of 3.65 metres while Leena Turtado of Western and Satya of Punjab claimed the silver and bronze respectively. North Zone men won the 4x100m relay gold.

Delhi and West UP finished second and third. Sudha of MP Zone clocked 35.2 minutes to annexed the 5 km walk. Anita of Northern Zone and Alice of Punjab finished second and third.

Delhi beat Rajasthan in National School Games

Delhi beat Rajasthan by 57 runs in the cricket competition of the 47th National School Games at the Chhattarsal Stadium in the Capital on Wednesday.

Scores: Delhi: 220 for 8 in 40 overs (Kamal Beniwal 71, Sushil Kumar 57, Rajkumar 49/4). Rajasthan: 163 for 7 in 40 overs (Raj Kumar Beniwal 72 n o, Davinder Mann 31/3, Kamal Deep 33/2).

Haryana (180: Sunny 82, Deepak 44, P Joshi 41/2) beat Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (177: Bhupinder 31, Amardeep 32, Pradeep Sahu 34/4, Deepak 22/2) by five wickets in another match.

In hockey, Delhi girls beat KVS by 7-0. Neelam (5), Sandhya and Rekha were the goal-getters. The Delhi boys crushed NVS 12-1, Himachal beat Andhra 8-0 and Maharashtra beat Kerala 2-0, Chhatisgarh beat Rajashtan 3-1 and Chandigarh beat Haryana 2-0 in other matches.

Youngsters hold Mughals in DSA league

Former champions Mughals Club were held to a goalless draw by Youngsters in a Group B match of the Delhi Soccer Association (DSA)-SAIL Senior Division League at the Ambedkar Stadium in the Capital on Wednesday. Earlier, the Group A match between Collegians and Youngmen fell through as the teams failed to turn up.

Thursday’s fixtures: Shastri vs New Delhi Heroes (1.30 pm), IAF (New Delhi) vs Goans (3 p m)—Ambedkar Stadium.
