Air Force fly past Goans; DSA League hit by
withdrawals New Delhi, December 27 Joyenta Das headed home the match-winner in the 39th minute of the match. The Goans were unlucky to drop points as they had played well, but poor finishing deprived them of a goal. The Goan boys, combining well through their medios Ram Singh and S.Edmund, initiated good moves in the initial stages of the match. They shook the Air Force goal when N. Shimray’s fine shot went straight into the hands of rival custodian Arbindo Bandopadhyay, who is also the captain of the Air Force team. Thereafter, the Airmen settled down to mount pressure on the Goan goal. Medios S.M. Palani, Idabat Hoosen and Priya Darshan initiated some threatening moves from both the flanks, but their forwards failed to cash in on the chances. The Airmen maintained pressure in the second half too and got the match-winner in the 39th minute. Joyenta Das nodded home off a cross from the left flank by Kalyan Pal, to give his team the vital lead. IAF tried to enhance their lead, but Priya Darshan muffed a golden chance to score. Air Force’s Joyenta Das was cautioned by referee Bikramjit Parkash following “ungentlemanly” behaviour by the player. Meanwhile, the spate of withdrawals continued unabated as another former champion, Shastri Club, played truant today. As a result, their match against New Delhi Heroes in Group A fell through. Yesterday, two reputed teams, Youngmen and Collegians, had failed to turn up for their match against each other. It is learnt that some of the clubs are unhappy with the rescheduling of the League, but according to DSA vice-president N.K. Bhatia, the association could not have held the League earlier due to a combination of reasons, including unavailability of Ambedkar Stadium as it was undergoing renovation work for the postponed inaugural Afro-Asian Games. Yet, the DSA managed to hold the A and B Division Leagues on the Delhi University ground recently. Normally, the Senior Division League is held in May, after the inter-state transfer of players. This year, the transfer was deferred to August on the request of the clubs and even the League was postponed for a few days due to the Ramzan season. But now that the DSA is ready to hold the League, some of the clubs are shying away on one pretext or the other, though the actual reason, according to sources, is that some of the clubs could not retain their star players during the inter-club transfers and are now finding it difficult to field a full team. The clubs are using the delayed holding of the League as a ruse to cover up their own lapses. Friday’s fixtures: Moonlight vs Collegians (1.30 pm); Shahdara F C vs Garhwal Heroes (3 pm)–Ambedkar Stadium. |
