NSS camp concludes

Chandigarh, December 30
The 10-day NSS camp on the theme “Youth for healthy society and youth for haryali’’ concluded at Government College, Sector 46, here today.

Presiding over the valedictory function, the Joint Secretary Finance-cum-DPI (Colleges), Mr K.A.P. Sinha, lauded the role of the NSS volunteers in the field of social service.

Earlier, Principal D.P. Singh welcomed the chief guest. He said that the NSS was playing a very positive role in personality development of the students.

The following were declared best campers: Munish Kapila, Deep Singh, Shiv Kumar, Sawarndeep Singh and Mandeep Singh. Amongst the girls, the outstanding campers were Renu, Geetika, Ramandeep and Rinki.

Meanwhile, a 10-day camp is being conducted by Government Home Science College, Sector 10, at their adopted village, Khuda Ali Sher.

RP Singh stars in Godrej Club win

Good batting performance by R.P. Singh, with 69 runs off 36 balls, enabled Godrej Cricket Club to enter the semifinals of the eighth Jal Cup League Cricket Tournament, defeating Chandigarh Sports Club by six wickets at DAV College, Sector 10, here today.

Put into bat, Chandigarh Sports Club scored 182 runs for the loss of four wickets in the allotted 25 overs. Vishal Sahni (55), Narinder Walia (52) and Vaneet Chawla (28 no) were the main scorers.

In reply, captain R.P. Singh made 69 in 36 balls with 14 boundaries. Ravinder Nain contributed 35 runs. Godrej club achieved the target with two overs to spare.

Brief scores: Chandigarh Sports Club: 182 for 4 in 25 overs. (Vishal Sahni 55, Narinder Walia 52, Vaneet Chawla 28 no, Umesh Kaira 23 no; Amit Uniyal 2 for 21).

Godrej Cricket Club: 183 for 4 in 23 overs: (R.P. Singh 69, Ravinder Nain 35, Amit Uniyal 23, R. Choudhury 20 no; Narinder Walia 2 for 39).

In another match, Mohali Gymkhana also moved into semifinals outplaying High Court Cricket Club by 82 runs.

Brief scores: Mohali Gymkhana: 154 for 8 in 25 overs (Prabhjot Singh 58, Kamal Walia 31, Navdeep Singh 21, Kailash Sanwal 20, Raj Kumar 2 for 28, Jatinder Kumar 2 for 37).

In the first semifinal, Khalsa Cricket Club will take on Jupiter-XI on January 6, while Godrej Cricket Club will play Mohali Gymkhana on January 13. Both the matches will be of 35 overs and will be played at the JR Institute of Cricket Tech. Barwala, Panchkula.

St John’s trophy

St John’s High School defeated YPS Mohali by nine wickets in the final of the Second St John’s Challenger Cricket Trophy (under-14 section).

After winning the toss, YPS elected to bat. But they could not face the disciplined bowling attack of the St John’s team and were bundled out for 55 in 19 overs. Chasing the target St John’s team scored 56 runs in just eight overs for the loss of one wicket.

Brief scores: YPS-Mohali: 55 all out in 19 overs (Angad Kang 23, Virender Pal Singh 15; Gagandeep S. Thukral 2 for 2, Kanishak Gupta 2 for 15, Kritarth Jain 2 for 15).

St John’s High School, Sector 26: 56 for 1 in 8 overs (Arjanvir S. Chadha 27, Abhimanyu Syal 18 n.o., Abhinav Sharma 10 n.o.; Rustam 1 for 18).

Based on the performance in the league and final matches, the following awards were given: best all-rounder — Abhinav Sharma, St John’s School; best batsman — Arjanvir S. Chadha, St John’s School; best bowler — Kritarth Jain, St John’s School.

CNS tournament

All-round performance by Gurinder Saini enabled Life Insurance Corporation XI beat Punjab Civil Secretariat by 84 runs to enter the final of the CNS Cash Prize Cricket Tournament at the Gursagar ground here on Sunday.

LIC XI batted first and put up a total of 154 in the allotted 22 overs. Gurinder Saini (61) and Rajesh Patha (51) added 79 runs for the second wicket.

In replay, Punjab Civil Sectt-XI were bowled out for just 70 runs. They could not face the accurate bowling of Gurinder Saini and Mohan Singh Thakar, both claimed three wickets each.

In another match, a fine half century by Amar Kumar (53) enabled ICC to beat Pace Cricket Club by 13 runs.

Brief scores: LIC XI: 154 for 8 (Gurinder Saini 61, Rajesh Patha-51, Harminder Kaku-16; Paranjal Rana 2 for 36).

Punjab Civil Secretariat: 70 all out (Monpreet 22, Harnek 15, Gurvinder Saini 3 for 21, Mohan Thakar 3 for 17).

ICC: 186 for 8 in 22 overs (Aman Kumar 53, Jagjeet 30, Gulab Rubaw 36; Sanjay Dhull 4 for 23, Girish Bhanot 2 for 21).

Pace CC: 173 for 9 in 22 overs (Hitesh 68 n.o., Vineet Jain 41; Jagjeet Saini 3 for 36, Amandeep 2 for 30).
